Review
"...is characteristically O'Reilly through and through - vastly detailed, confidently written and not dressed up with too many screenshots or wild page designs. Although Linux Certifcation...is structured as a front-to-back read, mirroring the order of the LPIC topics, it also features page markings to help you use it as a quick reference guide when you've worked through it. The book shows you how to prepare for the LPIC exams, with exercises and examples galore, plus a host of massively useful practice exams to give you a taste of the real thing... O'Reilly's book is a monster, covering everything in great depth, and even though it's a bit costly it's worth the price given the exhaustive coverage therein. Just don't expect any kind of entertainment along the way - it's all very serious stuff." Verdict: A bulging, desk-warping behemoth of a book, tackling LPIC topics with clarity and excellent details. Rating: 9/10 - Mike Saunders, Linux Format, May 2007

Very good book, but incomplete, explanation on the review
By faraumont
Let's begin with the results, I passed both 101 and 102 exams and got my LPI 1 last month studying mainly this book.
Let me say again that this is a very good book. It is very well written and all topics are easy to understand to anyone with some previous knowledge of computers in general and the Linux operating system.
Now, the explanation to why I said it is incomplete. It simply does not cover every command and configuration file that may be asked about on the exams. There were some of them on my exams that the book didn't even mention. Given the broadth and changing of the subjects covered by the exams, I admit that covering everything is a very difficult task. So, the warning stays to anyone in the process of studying, if it is related to the topics asked by LPI but the book does not say anything about it, don't assume it won't be asked about, because it may.

Good luck to all and congratulations to the authors.

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
By Micah J. Miller
I am preparing for the LPI level one test and picked up this guide as a study reference. Overall, the quality of this book is outstanding and the material is presented in way that made it very easy to digest. I've broken the highlights down into three categories.
1. Good - Excellent explanation of the topics in the books. There were very few items I had to go to other sources from. The way this book is set up makes it great as a study guide or for future reference. Even if I wasn't going to take the test, I'd still keep this one within arms reach.
2. Bad - LPI has restructured their tests. This means that some of the 102 test topics are now in the 101 test. Make sure you get the correct list of study topics directly from LPI to ensure you are preparing for the correct subjects. Since these changes were made quite a while ago, I would have hoped that O'Reilly would have come up with a new version, but no luck.
3. UGLY - Several topics were not covered at all in the book. This is really dissapointing for me as I've always respected the O'Reilly books and found them to be way above par. But don't take my word for it. You can locate the missing parts by comparing the T-O-C and the LPI site
Overall, this is a great book. If you are currently a system administrator or work with Linux often, this matierial should be easy to pick up and understand. The book has in depth coverage along with a "Highlighters Index" for quick reviews and sample tests to help you prepare.

Improv Wisdom: Don't Prepare, Just Show Up, by Patricia Ryan Madson

In an irresistible invitation to lighten up, look around, and live an unscripted life, a master of the art of improvisation explains how to adopt the attitudes and techniques used by generations of musicians and actors.

Let’s face it: Life is something we all make up as we go along. No matter how carefully we formulate a “script,” it is bound to change when we interact with people with scripts of their own. Improv Wisdom shows how to apply the maxims of improvisational theater to real-life challenges—whether it’s dealing with a demanding boss, a tired child, or one of life’s never-ending surprises. Patricia Madson distills thirty years of experience into thirteen simple strategies, including “Say Yes,” “Start Anywhere,” “Face the Facts,” and “Make Mistakes, Please,” helping readers to loosen up, think on their feet, and take on everything life has to offer with skill, chutzpah, and a sense of humor.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Drama teacher turned self-help advisor Madson learned the hard way that playing by the rules doesn't always mean you win-despite doing all the right things, she was denied tenure in the job of her dreams. The acting teacher learned to jettison the script and improvise her life-and she ended up teaching at a much better university: Stanford. If you improvise, she says, you "will make more mistakes" but you'll also "laugh more often, and have some adventures." Here she offers 13 maxims to guide the fledgling improviser. "Say yes" with the ecstasy of Molly Bloom: it will open up new worlds. "Don't prepare": in focusing on the future, you might miss the present. "Start anywhere": take any entry into a problem, and once you get inside you'll have a better perspective. Madson offers little exercises drawn from improv acting that are easy and eye-opening, such as look at a familiar environment and notice something new in it. Or make a list of important places in your life, put down the book and just go to one of them. Madson's prose radiates the joy of living, the pleasure she has found in taking things as they come. Most self-help books offer a forced sense of inspiration; Madson is genuinely inspiring. "Say yes" to this book.

Review
“A marvelous guide to freedom and delight. Improv has become a wisdom tradition of its own and Patricia shows how its lessons can bring out the best in us.” —John Tarrant, author of Bring Me the Rhinoceros

“Patricia Ryan Madson is one of Stanford’s truly inspired teachers; she has changed the lives of thousands of students over the past twenty-eight years. In her smiling book, Improv Wisdom, she reminds us that being alive is like riding a bicycle—we always feel a little off-balance and insecure, but ‘in the act of balancing we come alive.’ She makes you want to get up and do something—try it out, make mistakes, laugh, play, and try it again.” —Charles Junkerman, Associate Provost and Dean of Continuing Studies, Stanford University

“Reading even just a few pages of Patricia Madson’s book might change your life forever. That’s what has happened to me. These pages are chock-full of wisdom, clarity, and helpful techniques on enhancing spontaneity in everyday life. Read this book—you will be glad and so will everyone else in your life.” —Nina Wise, author of A Big New Free Happy Unusual Life

“I have witnessed Patricia Madson’s magic touch in both her classes and her performances. Her students often describe her as a ‘goddess,’ but that may be an understatement. I rejoice that her wisdom is now available to new audiences.” —Philip G. Zimbardo, author of Psychology and Life and Shyness

“The premise of Patricia Madson’s book is astonishing: to practice the basic rules of improvisational theater is to walk a path toward a spiritually satisfying life. Her underlying claim is simple and sound: if you are willing to be completely present, making full use of whatever happens, you will find goodness in any situation. This is a lucid, wise, and free-spirited book.” —Norman Fischer, founder and teacher of the Everyday Zen Foundation

Life 101
By Rebecca Ryan
This book was recommended to me by a friend who's an improv genius, but I was taken with how broad the Improv Wisdom maxims are to everyone's life.

Ms. Madson organizes the book into 13 maxims, each given its own chapter. Samples include: #1: say yes; #2: don't prepare; #3: show up. Sounds simple, right? Although Ms. Madson writes in a tight, easy-to-abosrb style, she also looks you dead in the eye. For example, for people (like me) who just can't remember people's names, she calls it laziness. If you can't remember someone's name, she says you're breaking maxim #3. She doesn't stop there - she gives real improv exercises to build strengths in each maxim. (I tried her approach at the dog park yesterday when I met some new dogs - and their parents - and it worked!)

Improv Wisdom is my favorite new book for how to lead a creative, full life. (Move over, Stephen Covey!) I'm buying copies for everyone I care about and strongly recommend it to anyone who needs a refresher course for how to show up to their own life.

A Book to Read, Re-Read and Give to Others
By Jane Helm
I've had Patricia Ryan Madson's Improv Wisdom for a few months now. I keep re-reading parts and also buying additional copies for friends. It's enjoyable to read, but more enjoyable to use. My favorite chapter is entitled "Be Average," which sounds terrible (probably VERY terrible to the Stanford students who first experienced Madson's ideas) but it's freed me to write and do other things that waiting for perfection would have blocked. Moreover, the stress-reduction that goes with the principle improves the odds of being much better than average. It's a little book. Take it with you on your next trip.

An Energizing, Inspiring Approach to Your Life
By Enamorato
While the reviews for this book mention Patricia Ryan Madson's involvement with improvisational theatre, I was more familiar with her work as a teacher of Constructive Living - a Western adaptation of Japanese psychotherapies by clinician David K. Reynolds. Reynolds' aim is to help his students learn to live a fully present, action-oriented life in a world where problems are just as inevitable as successes and suffering just as much a part of life as joy. "Improv Wisdom" is actually closer in vein to a Constructive Living text than a book geared for improvisational theatre: the focus is not just on theatre, but on making the most of life no matter what one's circumstances. In Madson's words, this is "Saying Yes!" to life. Even just the IDEA that our lives are fully improvised - that we're making it up as we go along - can be a truly life-changing concept for many of us who have been brainwashed into micromanaging and planning every detail of every moment of our careers, family life and even our leisure time.

Reynolds' classic Constructive Living (Kolowalu Books) is still in print. It is a concise, elegant little book that has provided me much help that I highly recommend. Madson's work, however, takes a creative and fascinating departure. Being a clinician, Reynolds' approach was aimed at outgrowing one's emotional obstacles, and while this emphasis certainly appears in "Improv Wisdom" (see in particular, Chapters 5, called "Be Average", and 12, called "Take Care of Each Other"), Madson's incorporation of Keith Johnstone's work on reawakening to spontaneity results in an approach that truly inspires an appreciation for every second of life.

Like Reynolds' book, "Improv Wisdom" is realistic, engaging and extremely energizing to read. As a whole, Madson has a more joyful, exciting tone that is a welcome counterpoint to Reynold's hard-edged pragmatism. The two books complement each other well. Some of the chapters are particularly refreshing: Chapter 1 ("Say Yes") thoroughly has the potential to open one's life up in surprising ways; Chapter 6 ("Pay Attention") wakes one up out of the trance of autopilot and self-absorption; Chapter 10 ("Make Mistakes, Please") is a welcome antidote to the art of not only making mistakes, but learning to use them in creative ways.

There is a lot of important insight in this book that will improve one's relationship with life itself. It would make a wonderful graduation present as well as a great read before a trip. I read it before a yearly camping outing along the Potomac River. It completely subverted my tendency to obsessively plan activities for every minute of the day and allowed me to be present and spontaneous in ways that I hadn't been since I was a child. My friends appreciated the change as well, as I was also more open and present for them than before. Highly recommended on its own, or as a compliment to Reynold's "Constructive Living."

Remaking Society: Pathways to a Green Future, by Murray Bookchin

Remaking Society is a primer on Murray Bookchin's pioneering and controversial ideas on nature and society. A major spokesperson for the ecology movement for over 20 years, Bookchin here uncovers the roots of today's global ecological crisis in the emergence of social hierarchy and domination.

Bookchin argues that a humane solution to this crisis will require us to replace industrial capitalism with "an ecological society based on nonhierarchical relationships, decentralized democratic communities, and eco-technologies like solar power, organic agriculture, and humanly scaled industries." Drawing on the rich traditions of ecological science, anthropology, history, utopian philosophy, and ethics, Remaking Society offers today's Green activists a coherent framework for social and ecological reconstruction.

Very good treatise of anarchist thought
By Chris
The author looks back first to ancient tribal structures and finds a very egalitarian ethos in all aspects of life. The growth of hierarchies related to age, gender, wealth, etc, to a large extent eliminated that egalitarianism. These hierarchies seem to have began with age: old people could claim special powers for their accumulated wisdom and knowledge of tribal customs. Then war was made necessary to defend the attacks of aggressive neighboring communities: hence men with their specialties in military affairs gained dominance over women and their sphere. This need justified the centralization of power. Male chiefs who had functioned as generous community leaders and in whom any concentration of wealth or arrogance was an ultimate taboo, became despots. But many communities retained an egalitarian ethos and some communities even reverted to non-hierarchal forms of society after undergoing a despotic phase, such as the American Mound Builders and the Mayans. He notes that a good example of egalitarian indigenous values was on display when Hopi Indian children were attempted to be instructed in competitive sports by the whites sent to "civilize" them but they couldn't understand the concept of keeping score.
The bourgeoisie was significantly thought of as a marginal and anti-social element in every area of the world before capitalism emerged in Europe In the middle ages, markets were largely local, carefully regulated by guilds of craftsman. The nobles mainly sat on their on butts and took huge rents from their miserable serfs. It never occurred to them to horde poor people in factories and not uncommonly drive them to death to make goods and then make sick money from those goods whose wealth was created by their slaves. The marginal bourgeoisie class seems to have aspired to accumulate enough wealth to buy estates so they could live like the nobles.
The bourgeoisie became most powerful in England in the early Renaissance years. The nobility had largely destroyed itself trying to loot and ravage France during the War of the Roses. The new nobles were appointed from a lower class, the bourgeoisie and other middling sorts who had the instinct to relentlessly accumulate wealth and find new ways to exploit the inferior classes. With the growth of the bourgeoisie, the power of the state grew. There was serious resistance to the growth of state power by the nobles and rural communities, the latter who might have initially seen state power as buffer against abuses by the nobles but quickly discovered the bourgeois state was in many ways worse. He points to the interesting obviously flawed but still relatively egalitarian utopian visions of people like Thomas More.
The author has some interesting things to say about Marxism. That history goes through automatic stages is bunk. Marxism denies any root of spontaneity for organizing in communal egalitarian fashion. It can lead to the acceptance of plundering the earth's resources and exploitation of labor on the ground that such is "progressive" development. He gives the example of Marxist social democrat Reichstag members in Weimar Germany in the 20's,vetoing anti-monopoly legislation on the ground that blocking increasing concentration of wealth hindered the "progressive" development of capitalism. Marx for some reason did not take into account the ways capitalism would have of reforming itself to stave off its destruction such as the welfare state and regulatory agencies.
I would be amiss if I did not mention that the relationship between ecology and hierarchy is one of the prime themes of this book. It is not human nature which leads to environmental degradation but the domination of people by people (hierarchy). The hierarchy created by capitalist competion leads to the unhindered power to exploit earth's resources.
Well, what is the author's vision of a just society? He is all for technology. He can't stress enough how much he regards as dangerous those tendencies in the environmental movement who move into the forests and worship Goddesses and witches or other such crazy and silly things. His vision of society is rooted in the Greek ideal of citizenship. Yes, he writes, the Greeks had slaves and didn't treat ladies well, but compared to other socities in that era it was pretty progressive for that and much later periods of development of humanity. In Periclean Greece, governance was carried on by direct democracy. Property owning males were able to come to city-wide meetings and determine and vote on policies affecting them. He writes that this had some equivalent in the early town meeting forums in the early Puritan settlements in New England. It was seriously expected that the primary responsibility of a citizen was to take a day-to-day hand in governance, to be very knowledgeable about current affairs, and not to accumulate excessive wealth and to be generous in using their wealth.
Interestingly the author is against worker's control of workplaces. Such workplaces should be managed by city-wide assemblies made up all of all people. Workplaces managed directly by their workers or consumers such as in co-opsk, no much more benign than regular capitalist enterprises, still have to enter the destructive realm of competition. Directly democratic assemblies would have the interests of a sustainable environment, just allocation of resources at heart and other human needs, rather than the narrow interests of economic competition. Officials to run economic enterprises (as well as other necessary enterprises) would be appointed and closely monitored and easily recalled if need be.
This society is probably not going to happen within our lifetimes, the author stresses. People need to be educated about visions of society where people could freely develop their creative and intellectual potentials and not be hindered by wasting their energy creating products that only capitalists will gain the wealth from.
This is an excellent book though written in a prose style that to read is somewhat hard on the cerebrum...

a brief philosophical overview...
By A Customer
Not a work replete with big phrases or designed for only the most erudite of readers, this book is a good starting point for just about anyone who wants to "change the world". Using rational humanism as his basis, Bookchin attacks what he views as the mystical and anti-human approach to social ecology and to politics. While the author definitely points out many flaws in several prevailing belief systems, his excessive dependence on rationality can be a turn-off at times.

"Remaking Society:" a map of Bookchin's complex thinking
By A Customer
Murray Bookchin wrote "Remaking Society" as a synopsis of his life of radical thought. Bookchin details his theories of history, ecology, and political organization, with other subjects along the way, within his "Remaking Society." The language and the point are quite straightforward and the book serves as a handy reference to his prolific writing career.

Dividends are the benefits of owning a stock
By Mariusz Skonieczny
Now most investors and money managers buy stocks with the hope of short-term appreciation. Few buy them with the intentions of receiving dividends. However, when an investor purchases a company's stock, he or she becomes a partial owner in the business. As a benefit of being an owner, an investor receives a part of the company's earnings in dividends.

This book teaches readers about dividends, their importance, what to look for in a dividend-paying stock, how dividends pay for the stock, and much more. The last chapter lists selected stocks with good dividend records. This book is an excellent introduction to dividend investing.

Dividends, the key to investing success..
By Mr. M. J. W. Montgomery
This is a very good book, and simple to read for even novice investors. A note, the entire book deals only with US listed stocks, so, to buy any of the stocks listed here, you need a broker with access to US markets.

The book covers compounding of dividends, a very, very important subject. It also warns about selecting stocks with yields that are too high, and unlikely to be maintained, or stocks which have a high yield, but are cyclical.

This is a very good book, for anyone, who might be considering thier retirement investment strategy.

A word of warning: This book is not about returns of 2000% per annum. Dividends are dull and boring. But, they make a good basis for investment.

Excelent book for Beginners - Maybe One Major Mistake
By Gustavo Mirapalheta
As I said in the title, and many other reviewers have pointed out, this is an excelent book for beginners in the stock market. Even more if you're confused by the array of stocks to buy and techniques to select them.

Having said that, I must point out one major flaw that I think the authors have made when writing the book. In the first chapters they mention the total return that an investor would have received from SP500 in the 70s based in the index itself and with the dividends reinvested.

In my opinion, being the SP500 a total return index, i.e. one in which the reinvestment of dividends is included, the total return should be the same. Nonetheless the idea makes a point in showing the importance of dividend reinvestment policies.

Besides this minor mistake, the book is an excelent read and guide to the stock market.

The Great Initiates, by Edward Schure, Edouard Schure

The Great Initiates encompasses long centuries of human existence and reflects our great search―the greatest search of all―the quest for the spirit. This book describes the motivations behind external history, the growth of religious striving, the rise and fall of cultures, and indicates their importance for us today. It reflects the lives and deeds of human beings of extraordinary stature: Rama, Krishna, Hermes, Moses, Orpheus, Pythagoras, Plato, and Jesus.

In these pages one witnesses spiritual adventure of a depth and intensity rarely experienced by creative human beings, even in their most exalted moments. This excitement of discovery which breathes through The Great Initiates may well explain its continuing popularity after over a century.

Written in a relaxed narrative, Schure rolls out exactly what he promises, ' a study of the secret history of religions',
Centered upon the primary charismatic genius of Rama, Krishna, Moses, Orpheus, Pythagorous, Plato, and Jesus Christ, Schure ties together a greatly compelling story of the history and manifestation of revelation and enlightenment in human history,
A great read.

Tales of Mystery and Imagination
By Dale E. Essary
First published in 1889 in France, "The Great Initiates" (TGI) reflects the author's lifelong quest for spiritual truth along the myriad byways of mythology and esoterica. According to the book's introductory biography, the author had experienced a "divine vision" in the cathedral of Strausbourg as a young boy shortly after the death of his mother. Orphaned in his youth, he later dedicated himself to recreating the sacred drama found in the Eleusinian Mysteries of ancient Greece for the purpose of modern consumption. The efforts of this calling, the author was convinced, would rekindle the spiritual awareness of the ancient world in what he considered to be the vacuous materialism of modern society. It was from a subsequent series of "visitations" that the author embarked upon what became a ten-year literary effort, which culminated with his list of the top seven prophets of all time: Rama, Krishna, Hermes, Moses, Orpheus, Pythagoras, and Jesus. The author had been made aware of the common source of spiritual illumination disseminated through these great initiates, whose all-encompassing theme includes such doctrines as reincarnation, panentheism, henotheism, and the "divine spark" within man. However, this prosaic sojourn is launched from the shores of incredulity. Chapter One considers the origins of humanity "according to esoteric traditions" (p. 36). Human civilization first began about five thousand years ago with the red race, having thrived on the "southern continent [i.e., Plato's Atlantis], while all of Europe and part of Asia were still under water" (37). This ill-fated journey forges on, plowing through the rolling waves of implausibility first by redefining mythology, then by rewriting history. Krishna becomes the "first of the Messiahs," the "eldest of the sons of God" (p. 79). Hence, with TGI's treatise on Krishna we see a pattern of messianic similitude emerge through parallel accounts of the Gospels' Virgin Birth (Chapter 8), the Sermon on the Mount (p. 111-112), the Good Samaritan (p. 112), the miraculous catch of fishes (p. 112), a woman anointing his feet (p. 114), and the triumphal entry into the temple city (p. 115-116). Moreover, Krishna is seen as having volunteered himself to be sacrificed as a reconciliatory offering, allowing his foes to tie him to a tree and pierce him with arrows in the chest. However, as Hindu scriptures have it, Krishna was incarnated as the seventh son of a married couple named Devaki and Vasu-deva, and was killed by a hunter who mistook him for a deer and shot him in the heel with a magic-laced arrow. TGI's normalization efforts continue by making Moses out to be a blood relative of Rameses and an initiate of Osiris (p. 172), whose Egyptian name was Hosarsiph (p. 178). Upon emerging from a ritual-induced coma to expatiate the murder of an Egyptian guard, the reborn visionary took to the desert with his new name Moses which, according to esoteric wisdom, means "The Saved One" (p. 186). Although TGI does not care to enlighten us as to which language this translation stems from, we know for sure that it was not taken from the Hebrew, in which Moses' name means "drawn out of the water," which is precisely what Pharaoh's daughter had done when she adopted the infant Moses (Exodus 2:10). But never mind that TGI lacks linguistic finesse, for a true understanding of Genesis is at hand. Having been so heavily influenced by Egyptian culture, Moses had originally written Genesis in hieroglyphics, the language of choice for those whose intentions are to embed multiple and hidden meanings into their prose. Alas, all but the "shallowest" of meanings were lost through subsequent translations, and Moses' original intent can now only be meted out with the aid of Kaballistic decoder rings and a little guidance from the learned. On a more tangible note, esoteric history has it that Moses led the Exodus with little resistance during an opportunistic time when Pharaoh Menephtah was predisposed to repelling an advancing Lybian army (p. 204-205). While there is no record of any Menephtah, there was a Pharaoh named Merneptah (1212-1202 B.C.), son of Seti I, who had defeated invaders from the Aegean Sea and had desolated Israel in the process. More down-to-earth historians have it that the Pharaoh of the Exodus was probably either Amunhotep II (ca. 1446 B.C.) or Rameses II (ca. 1290 B.C.). Last but not least, the good ship TGI ventures into stormy waters as it reinvents Jesus to render him worthy of the initiate's crown. The pre-existence of reincarnated souls is promulgated through Jesus by taking John 8:58 out of context (p. 427). It was through membership in the Essene cult that Jesus learned the esoteric teachings of Krishna, Osiris, Orpheus, and Pythagoras during his young adulthood (p. 438). Forget that no particular reason is given as to why a person brought up in an orthodox Jewish home would not have reviled these pagan teachings, and would have embraced the apocryphal Book of Enoch with great enthusiasm, from which the Essenes drew their knowledge regarding the Son of Man (p. 439). And wouldn't you know it, just as was the fate of Moses' contributions to higher meaning, the deeper esoteric teachings of Jesus were lost to antiquity by the second-century compilers of the Synoptic Gospels. No wonder, then, that much clarification is in order; it seems that the heavenly beings observed by the three apostles during the Transfiguration were not Moses and Elijah as recorded in the Gospels, but the six initiates that had preceded Jesus (p. 473)! Cap these novel concepts with denials of the Virgin Birth, the bodily resurrection, and the Second Coming, and our final destination emerges upon the horizon before us. However, there comes a time when some passengers aboard a ship without sails or a rudder may want to consider abandoning ship and taking their chances in the dinghy, for the captain of this cruise is of the opinion that, in addition to the initiate Jesus, angels have the power to forgive (p. 460). Imagine that.

The Great Schure!
By Ryan Kouroukis
This is perhaps the most Noble and Grandiose account of history, culture and religion that exists in narrative form.

Edouard Schure is surely a Master. An Ever Inspirer.

No one I have ever read has been able to produce the same effects in my Soul than Schure.

Whoever reads this book with his soul will finally be able to see "The-All" like when one climbs the 9 symphonic mountains of Anton Bruckner.

This novel should be read along side Schure's other famous treatise "From Sphinx to Christ - An Occult History", (for futher details, clarifications and explantions not included in "The Great Initiates").
