Economic history of the middle and late 20th Century.

This is a wonderful history of Economics in the modern world...it is not an Economics book, but a history book from an economic standpoint. I also have the DVD collection. TRULY a wonderful book and DVD's. I have bought three copies as gifts. My Economics professor told me to buy them and he is probably one of the best professors I have ever had. It enlightens one as to Keynesian v. Austrian school economics...Keynes v. Hayek. If you want to understand the world development in the 20th Century from an economic point of view rather than a political point of view, then you also will love this book.

About the Author

Mark H. Anshel, PhD, is a professor in the department of health and human performance with a joint appointment in the psychology department at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro. He is the author of more than 135 research publications, four fitness books, and multiple editions of the text Sport Psychology: From Theory to Practice. His research since 2007 has concerned the effectiveness of a cognitive-behavioral model on exercise participation and adherence called the Disconnected Values Model. Anshel is recognized as an international leader in providing evidence-based programs and linking research with practice in the areas of exercise and fitness psychology and sport psychology.

Over the course of his career, Anshel has gained hands-on experience consulting with more than 3,000 clients on healthy habits, particularly the use of exercise. His practical career experience began with seven years as a fitness director in community recreation. From 2000 to 2002 Anshel served as a performance coach at the Human Performance Institute in Orlando, Florida, where he provided corporate clients with a cognitive-behavioral program on replacing unhealthy habits with more desirable lifestyle routines. He also served as a performance consultant and researcher related to improving wellness and coping skills with the Murfreesboro Police Department from 2005 to 2011.

In 2009, Anshel was awarded the Distinguished Research Scholar Award from Middle Tennessee State University. Anshel is a fellow of the American Psychological Association (Division 47, Exercise and Sport Psychology). He is the founder and director of the Middle Tennessee State University Employee Health and Wellness Program, which received grant funding of $130,000 over two years. Anshel also served for 10 years on the editorial board of the Journal of Sport Behavior.

In his free time, Anshel enjoys jogging, writing on health-related topics, and reading current events and health-related research. He resides in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

"OMG, this is the BEST book I've ever read! I'm going to read EVERYTHING by this author! I wonder if he's going to be doing a book signing in my area?? What?? He's not a Good Reads author?? I thought EVERYONE was a GoodReads author. Even those people who self-publish on Amazon and their book has a 5-star review, from 3 people. I'll bet you wouldn't need to go to ancestory.com or buy a DNA test kit to know the three reviews were incestuous. Maybe I should see if I could be a GoodReads author. I wrote this review... Do they really write serious reviews on Amazon about a textbook? What the freak is wrong with people??? I included a picture of the book cover. Second, I am not trying to piss my father off by...what was it? ‘Showering my attention on a nobody like you’. I resent that you would even think of yourself in that light. I find I’m incredibly intrigued by you, Claire. I happen to think you are beautiful, funny, charming, completely refreshing and the more I get to know you the more I like you. I admire your drive and dedication and now that I know something of your background, I think I am in complete awe of you. I won’t interfere with your internship, but I would like to make you aware right now that I absolutely intend to pursue your attention outside of work.”

Good intro to the story, just wish subsequent novellas weren't priced so high.

I enjoyed the story and the characters, except for Drew's father who is a complete jerk. I was disappointed in how easily Drew gave in to him. I'm anxious to see what happens next, but the price is holding me back. While this book is currently free, each following novella is $2.99 a piece.

I found as I read this that I didn't even care that it ended with a cliffhanger. I didn't care enough about any of the characters to even consider spending a penny to find out will happen in the next installment. I wouldn't even spend my time reading it if it was free.

Intellectual historians widely acknowledge that Einstein's theory of relativity and Picasso's cubist paintings launched modernity. Although the physicist and painter never met, their creative geniuses developed simultaneously under similar social circumstances and during an unrivaled period of cultural ferment. Moreover, Miller, professor of history and philosophy of science at University College London, contends, both Einstein and Picasso were deeply influenced by mathematician and philosopher Henri Poincar‚'s treatise on non-Euclidean geometry, La Science et l'hypothŠse. Both Einstein and Picasso borrowed from Poincar‚ the idea of a temporal and spatial dimension beyond our own that could be captured in art and physics. Miller plunders previously unavailable sources as he narrates the parallel biographies of Einstein and Picasso. He traces in great detail the influences of photography, geometry and X-ray technology on Picasso's art as well as the influence of aesthetic theory on Einstein's science. Through close readings of the theory of relativity and Picasso's groundbreaking Les Demoiselles d'Avignon, Miller argues that these two men were working on the same problem: "how to represent space and time at just the moment in history when it became apparent that these entities are not what we intuitively perceive them to be." During the span of a few years shortly after the start of the 20th century, roughly from 1904 to 1908, two quiet revolutions in how we perceive the world were underway. In Switzerland, Einstein was working on the nature of time and space. In Paris, Picasso tackled a similar problem in the creation of the seminal Cubist work "Les Demoiselles d'Avignon" (for a detailed history of this painting, see William Rubin and others' Les Demoiselles d'Avignon, LJ 2/1/95). Miller (history and philosophy of science, University Coll., London) examines the two men and the revolutions they initiated. Pulling together the lives of the physicist and the painter, as well as the band of friends, colleagues, influences, and lovers that surrounded them at that time. Miller creates a compelling argument for the confluence of aesthetics and science. Illustrated with scientific diagrams as well as work by Picasso and others, this is recommended for larger collections on modern art in public libraries and for most general academic collections. A Brilliant Point of View

In this intriguing new book, science historian Arthur I. Miller looks in parallel at the achievements of Einstein in physics and Picasso in art and explores the common origins of each. But first he asks the important question of why--what were they after? No less than the truth, it seems, and a representation of nature--space and time--that went deeper than the side of it we perceive through our senses. He shows how it was basically the same problem for both, and how they went about tackling it, with particular details given as the story unfolds.
The author's energetic writing style captures the spirit of that magic time at the beginning of the 20th century when dramatic changes were in the air--the discovery of X-rays, new developments in photography and filmmaking, breakthroughs in mathematics and psychology. The book shows how Einstein and Picasso responded to these changes, arriving on the scene poor but full of optimism and confidence, with a savvy in picking up on opportunities that Bill Gates would probably admire.
Chapters on Einstein alternate with those on Picasso; occasionally, one man makes an appearance in the other's space (in the form of an observation by the author, because, of course, the two never met). This gives a sense of events occurring at the same time. At one point we see them grappling with questions of simultaneity, framed in this technique. Harold Pinter couldn't have done better.
The stories of their personal lives, and how they influenced their work, are told in a very absorbing way--their poignant relationships with women that often ended in tragedy, the friends they spent time with, the opinions they listened to, the books and journals they read, and the cafes they frequented (especially when their early apartments didn't have kitchens).
A recent Sunday New York Times review aptly likens the book to "an intellectual thriller." The key to the mystery lies in the book by French mathematician Henri Poincare, "Science and Hypothesis," mentioned repeatedly. Picasso was intrigued by Poincare's discussion of the fourth dimension--motion in time--and the author describes how Picasso got wind of it and who explained it to him. Einstein had read a German translation of the book and was impressed with its brilliant mathematics and views on "aesthetic sensibility," and we read how notions of aesthetics were essential to his discovery of relativity.
The author gives due credit to Cezanne's influence on Picasso (After all, who can forget his famous aphorism that everything in nature is modeled on the sphere, the cone, and the cylinder?) Then he shows how Picasso took geometrization a step further, and then some, with a very well thought out analysis of the mathematical underpinnings of cubism that gives a fuller understanding of the paintings.
Arthur Miller draws on his background in physics to show how Einstein discovered relativity. (Math phobes shouldn't worry--there aren't any equations.) He especially goes into how Einstein, rather than relying completely on empirical data, used conceptual thought, which is often a difficult process. It's an approach that goes a long way to explaining why Einstein succeeded where others didn't.
The author supports his views with an abundance of carefully researched information and ties it all together, and doesn't overlook subtle clues. It could take some effort to get through certain parts of the book, but he gives you a great deal of help. He takes you along on the adventure, and in some of the pages on Einstein invites you to do your own thought experiment, using examples from everyday life, such as an elevator ride.
I imagine this book will fascinate a wide range of readers, both scholars and laypersons interested in the ideas that shaped our time, and will inspire lively discussions for years to come.

Thinking Differently

Miller's book does a splendid job of examining the various influences leading to the conceptual breakthroughs of Einstein and Picasso. Their courage to think differently and to find new perspectives is inspiring and offers insights into the creative process. It is no "easy read" however. Where his book falls short is in the concluding chapter: there he attempts to formulate a theory of the creative process which was wholly unsatisfying and unconvincing to this reader. The first seven chapters were wonderful and make this book worth reading.

Trey Grainger manages the Search Technology Development group at CareerBuilder.com. His search experience includes handling multi-lingual content across dozens of markets/languages, machine learning, genetic algorithm and user group based relevancy tuning, geo-spatial search and validation, and work on customized payload scoring models, data mining, clustering, and recommendations. Trey is the Founder of Celiaccess.com, a gluten-free search engine, and is a frequent speaker at Lucene and Solr-related conferences.

Timothy Potter is an architect on the Big Data team at Dachis Group, where he focuses on large-scale machine learning, text mining, and social network analysis. Tim has worked extensively with Lucene and Solr technologies and has been a speaker at Lucene Revolution. Excellent guide to Solr/Lucene - No matter what you already know, you will learn something from this book

This is a truly outstanding book. In the 25+ years that I have been engaged in the software profession, I can unequivocally state that this is one of the best software books I have ever read. It is a rare technical book that provides useful (i.e. "actionable") information whether you are a novice to search in general or Solr/Lucene in particular or a battle hardened veteran of the search software biz.

The prose is clear, jargon free and non-recursive, meaning that you don't already have to know what they are talking about to know what they are talking about (if you have ever been there, you know what I mean). The organization is well thought out, moving from basic search and Solr/Lucene concepts like precision and recall, text analysis, query parsing, inverted token mapping, faceting and scoring (Lucene style!) to cutting-edge aspects of search like distributed search (scaling), handling multiple languages and performance tuning considerations. The later chapters go into every important aspect of Solr with the same clarity and thoroughness as the introductory chapters.

When you finish this book, you will have the foundation necessary to tackle real world information discovery problems using Solr. Combined with the classic Lucene In Action by McCandless, Hatcher and Gospodnetic, your next step will be to dive into the fascinating world of Open Source Search with source code, JIRA tickets, patches and discussion threads. Every technical book is a snapshot of a technology at some point in its evolution. The timing of this book is fortunate as Solr has recently seen some significant advances in distribution and scalability, which are thoroughly covered. Nevertheless, no book can stay current (that is just their nature) especially with technology that is evolving as rapidly as Solr/Lucene. The authors acknowledge this fact and provide excellent step-by-step introductions on how to get involved in the Open Source process such as how to download and compile the latest (nightly) source and how to write and/or install a JIRA patch. This is where the real fun begins. Armed with the knowledge that you gain from this book, you can enter this exciting arena with confidence.

Absolutely Essential for anyone learning Solr

I believe this book will be soon be regarded as the authoritative reference for Apache Solr. There is a lot of information in this guide but it is organized excellently and very easy to follow. I read between 10-20 tech books a year and this is the best I have seen in a quite a while. The topics covered will be relevant whether you are new to Solr or are an experienced Solr Admin looking for information on SolrCloud and advanced tuning concepts.

Don't be afraid of the size of the book, it really deserves your time!

I was very happy when this book was announced and was looking forward to reading the full version of it. Finally i got it a few weeks ago!
After reading the introduction i realized this will be one of those books you will want to have on your shelf.
It promises a deep walk through on Solr capabilities and its almost 600 pages don't disappoint you!
Understanding Solr is not an easy task, however the authors manage to explain every topic with good language and clear examples.
I strongly recommend "text analysis", "facet search" and "taking Solr to the next level" chapters, which are full of insights and "ahh" moments. (At least for those who don't have a deep understanding of Solr).
Don't be afraid of the size of the book, it really deserves your time! Thanks guy for good work

Great Series - Buy all three

This is the the third book in the series. Black Heart is great because all of the situations left hanging finally get some level of resolution. It is an excellent series and I would suggest you purchase it. But I highly suggest that prospective readers purchase Payback and Killer Country at the very same time as Black Heart (or have read them). Because the way the author wrote the series was in a manner that reminds me of a soap opera that simply doesn't resolve itself in the first two books so you are forced to wait until you reach Black Heart for answers. This series when read altogether is actually quick and satisfying reading because you get the big picture and the small details stretched out over three books. This is not a happily ever after series for the characters which gives it more of a real life quality. There would be a temptation to read this book first, but I suggest reading them as written, because characters reappear with more information and the author does not dwell on repeating incidents in the first two books so a reader would miss out not knowing the back stories. This series is unique because it has a truly sinister female character. I actually wasn't sure about her but over three books she developed into a quite memorable character. There are male villains but truly you are surprised with the creepy female lead quietly running all kinds of plots against the main character Bishop who it turns out she has a murky history with. Oddly the female villian is a strange match to Bishop in the mind games and retribution enacted. The author is clever to explain how the female developed over quite a long time into the truly nasty piece of work and a portion of me wanted to sympathize with her but she was such a crazy, intelligent, damaged, annoying person I simply wanted a good end for her. The author did write her well enough for me to wait for any form of resolution. The main character Bishop is a clever man but loses his focus occasionally due to the continual attempts to get at him through his family. Bishop's partner Pylon could have had a larger part because he was well written with interesting observations but he was eventually part of the background rather that a partner in the mayhem. Purchase this book and the series because you will be kept interested with compelling characters in stories that twist and turn but come together in the end.

A crime trilogy worth reading

The third book in the trilogy which revolves around Sheemina February's quest for revenge against Mace Bishop, an ex-freedom fighter, arms dealer, and intelligence operative, now a partner in a security company providing protection for VIP's and the well-to-do visiting Cape Town, South Africa.

Gritty, fast-paced, authentic and scary would be good words to describe this novel which brings the story of Smeemina's revenge to a close. The novel plays off over a period of just a few days, and during that period the stakes grow high -- life or death.

This book also does a great job of showing off Cape Town in every respect: its beauty, squalor, snobbishness, charity, pleasure and pain. The impressive thing that Nicols achieves is that he weaves these descriptive and editorial passages so tightly into the narrative that the reader becomes totally immersed in the whole experience.

I had actually never seen anything by Mike Nicol before I unwittingly stumbled onto his second book (in a bookshop) in the Mace Bishop Trilogy (Killer Country). Suffice to say that I was hooked from the very beginning and it was one of those books where you hate it because it comes to an end. Thereafter I was determined to find book 3 which I did on Amazon and bought it. Suffice to say if Mike Nicil does not start a brand new Mace Bishop Trilogy as in 4, 5 and 6, I will be dramatically hugely unimpressed. His characters are awesome, the way the author brings them to life, unfolds each of the sub plots and rolls them into the main plot is story telling at its best. So Mr Nicol.....you CANNOT now permanently move away from Mace and Pylon .......please!!!

Waste of money and time

This book was a waste of my money and time. It is poorly written, lacks any concrete programming examples, and looks like it was typeset by someone new to wordprocessing.

very helpful and easy to understand

the book was very good for leaning more on GML. i wouldn't recommend it for people new to GML because it used basic terms you may needed to know. it provided lots of examples showing what exactly they do. also, this book is on functions like: for, and, while,ect. this isn't on stuff like how to use d3d_draw_block. i found the book useful and easy to use.
