A fantastic book... wonderful insight into the Scriptures. ~ Ian Upton, Sydney, Australia

In this classic book, we are shown the breadth of impact of Christ... The Bible stands as a whole, a planned, inspired and flawless whole with a constant thread of God's rescue plan for mankind, rather than a disparate mosaic of books on unconnected issues. ~ Edwin Cross, London

I should have known there would be problem's when the author's name has been misspelled (Hodgkin not Hodgin). This is a scan and text conversion of the second edition. There are MANY errors and the page layout is lost so it is difficult to follow at times.

This book is in my top 10 Christian books of all time.
By David W. Hooper
I have a third edition, 1909 version handed down to me from my grandparents, an I can use it in my preaching today! It remains fresh after 100 years! It points out the Christlikeness of bible characters like Boaz, Joseph and others. It also covers similarities between old practices as Jesus' life.

The perfect book for seeing the prophecies of our Messiah and Saviour Yeshua in the Old Testament come to fulfillment in the New Testament! An eye-opener for the Jewish community who have the courage to read the end of the story that begins in "their" Scriptures.

Dynamic Models in Biology, by Stephen P. Ellner, John Guckenheimer

From controlling disease outbreaks to predicting heart attacks, dynamic models are increasingly crucial for understanding biological processes. Many universities are starting undergraduate programs in computational biology to introduce students to this rapidly growing field. In Dynamic Models in Biology, the first text on dynamic models specifically written for undergraduate students in the biological sciences, ecologist Stephen Ellner and mathematician John Guckenheimer teach students how to understand, build, and use dynamic models in biology.

Developed from a course taught by Ellner and Guckenheimer at Cornell University, the book is organized around biological applications, with mathematics and computing developed through case studies at the molecular, cellular, and population levels. The authors cover both simple analytic models--the sort usually found in mathematical biology texts--and the complex computational models now used by both biologists and mathematicians.

Linked to a Web site with computer-lab materials and exercises, Dynamic Models in Biology is a major new introduction to dynamic models for students in the biological sciences, mathematics, and engineering.

Review
"What is remarkable about Dynamic Models in Biology is that it truly speaks to students of biological sciences. It puts biology first, and then tries to explain how mathematical tools can explain biological phenomena. Nothing else I've seen does this anywhere near as well. The authors have combined their experience to produce and excellent textbook."--Bill Satzer, MAA Reviews

"This is a great book and I expect that it will play an important role in the teaching of mathematical biology and the development of the next generation of mathematical biologists for many years to come."--Marc Mangel, SIAM Review

"Dynamic Models in Biology stands apart from existing textbooks in mathematical biology largely because of its interdisciplinary approach and its hands-on, project-oriented case studies and computer laboratories. In an effort to explore biology in more detail, the authors bravely chose a style that differs from the classical biomath texts . . . whose focus is more on formal mathematics."--Lewi Stone, BioScience

"The book begins with a stellar overview of the purpose of modeling, contrasting statistical with dynamical models, and theoretical with practical models both clearly and even-handedly...[E]ngaging the full breadth and depth of this book could be an education for both instructors and students alike."--Frederick R. Adler, Mathematical Biosciences

"[S]tudents from both biology and mathematics can gain much from this book. Dynamic Models in Biology would be appropriate for use in a semester or two-quarter course; however, with judicious selection of topics, it can be used in a quarter. My students included undergraduates in biology with knowledge only of calculus, undergraduates in mathematics, and graduate students and academic staff in biology, all enrolled on a ten-week course. . . . Overall, Dynamic Models in Biology fills an important niche in the biological modeling canon. It occupies a place on my shelf next to Edelstein-Keshet (1988) and Murray (1989), and like them, will become a well-thumbed reference."--Carole L. Hom, Environmental Conservation

From the Back Cover

"This book is written with the reality of biology students and their apprehension about mathematics in mind. The applications of mathematical models to real biological problems are not contrived, as they are in a number of other texts. And the biology examples are taken from the current literature--a wonderful help to those who will be teaching with this book."--Jim Keener, University of Utah, author of Principles of Applied Mathematics and Mathematical Physiology

"Dynamic Models in Biology is a new and significant contribution to the field. Very well written and clearly presented, it fulfills its goal of bringing dynamic models into the undergraduate biology curriculum. Indeed it puts biology first, and then seeks to show how biological phenomena can be explained in mathematical terms."--Martin Henry H. Stevens, Miami University

"This excellent book is a major contribution to the literature. Strong biologically and mathematically, well-organized, and engagingly written, it introduces the subject of dynamical models in biology in as coherent a way as I have seen anywhere. Few authors could approach this topic as authoritatively as do Ellner and Guckenheimer."--Simon Levin, Princeton University, author of The Importance of Species and The Encyclopedia of Biodiversity

About the Author
Stephen P. Ellner is Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Cornell University. He has published numerous papers on subjects from measles epidemics to bumblebee behavior, in publications including "Science" and "Nature". John Guckenheimer is Professor of Mathematics at Cornell University. He is the coauthor of "Nonlinear Oscillations, Dynamical Systems, and Bifurcations of Vector Fields".

An excellent recent overview of modeling
By Hillel J. Chiel
This is an excellent book for students or faculty interested in learning more about the current state of the art in modeling of biological systems. The authors make a great effort to keep the mathematical sophistication at a level that students (or faculty) who primarily have a biological background will still be able to follow in some detail. They are also able to suggest some of the exciting current areas of research and new areas for the future. All in all, well worth reading if you are interested in the topic of modeling of biological systems.

Great book for ecologists
By Nathan Roberts
This book is excellent at describing the utility of models for ecologists. It describes the theory and application. Unlike many others, it also describes the limitations. It is written in such as way that it is useful for novices to experienced statisticians.

Great for 2-3rd Grade
By Kimberly M.
Put little princesses together with baby animals, and what do you have? A recipe for reading! My 7-year-old daughter loved this series. She read all of them in two days! I'll copy this review to the other books we bought here in this series.

A Great Read
By Claire
In this book, The Rescue Princesses - The Lost Gold, there are treasure hunters trying to find gold that has been lost and buried somewhere in the forest. But to do that, they will have to cut down trees. Princess Isabella is not happy when she sees them ruining the forest. Isabella needs help; she isn't going to let them destroy the forest. So, she calls her friends with her magic ring. Isabella, Rosalind, Amina and Lottie are all princesses that formed a special group called the "Rescue Princesses." They made a promise to always help animals in need, no matter how dangerous it was. In this story, the Rescue Princesses don't just help save the trees, but the monkeys who live there as well.

I like the adventure in this book because the Rescue Princesses have to use "ninja moves" to get around the forest without being seen by the treasure hunters. I also like the humor is this book because Petro, Isabella's monkey, is mischievous. One time he stole the queen's hair clip and she had to chase him around the palace. She couldn't keep up once he ran into the jungle!

I recommend this book to anyone who likes animals, adventure, humor and people working together to help one another.

princesses that don't kiss boys
By Jherseygirl
My 8yo daughter emphatically does not like princesses as all they do is 'kiss boys'. So I was very surprised when she came home from the book fair with one of these saying she wanted to read more of them. From what I gather, as I haven't had a chance to read them for myself, is each princess has an animal that they rescue. Quote from my daughter, 'they all have a sense of adventure and don't kiss boys'. So, yeah, I would absolutely recommend them.

Searching for the Just City: Debates in Urban Theory and Practice (Questioning Cities)From Brand: Routledge

Cities are many things. Among their least appealing aspects, cities are frequently characterized by concentrations of insecurity and exploitation. Cities have also long represented promises of opportunity and liberation. Public decision-making in contemporary cities is full of conflict, and principles of justice are rarely the explicit basis for the resolution of disputes. If today’s cities are full of injustices and unrealized promises, how would a Just City function? Is a Just City merely a utopia, or does it have practical relevance? This book engages with the growing debate around these questions.

The notion of the Just City emerges from philosophical discussions about what justice is combined with the intellectual history of utopias and ideal cities. The contributors to this volume, including Susan Fainstein, David Harvey and Margit Mayer articulate a conception of the Just City and then examine it from differing angles, ranging from Marxist thought to communicative theory. The arguments both develop the concept of a Just City and question it, as well as suggesting alternatives for future expansion. Explorations of the concept in practice include case studies primarily from U.S. cities, but also from Europe, the Middle East and Latin America.

The authors find that a forthright call for justice in all aspects of city life, putting the question of what a Just City should be on the agenda of urban reform, can be a practical approach to solving questions of urban policy. This synthesis is provocative in a globalised world and the contributing authors bridge the gap between theoretical conceptualizations of urban justice and the reality of planning and building cities. The notion of the Just City is an empowering framework for contemporary urban actors to improve the quality of urban life and Searching for the Just City is a seminal read for practitioners, professionals, students, researchers and anyone interested in what urban futures should aim to achieve.

Review

"Reading The Just City, one becomes aware that urban scholarship has been inexorably leading towards a book exactly like this one for a long time. These essays synthesize the debates that engaged us in our studies of the 20th-century city, and chart out the intellectual path we will be taking in the 21st."

-- Dennis R. Judd, University of Illinois at Chicago

"Here at last are essays for our times. With the collapse of the neo-liberal order, we must rethink how we can construct a new life in cities around the world, a life based on conceptions of social justice. The essays in this volume are not only state of the art, but are written with passion, providing examples to stir the embers of belief that we can build a better world."

-- John Friedmann, Prof. emeritus UCLA, Hon. Professor, University of British Columbia

"Cities were where the division of labour began. Then planned cities housed the ordered life of bourgeois commerce but excluded generations of women, poor people and migrants from the benefits of urban living. The idealised city was not the just city. Today, difference is recognised in urban discourses but a widening gap separates those who gain from a city’s opportunities and those who are disenfranchised on a global scale. Given an urgent need to understand how urban justice can be produced, this book is timely. It brings together some of the most accomplished commentators in the field. The writing is always incisive, ranging from philosophical discussion to examination of tensions in planning debates and case studies. The book offers a coherent approach without masking complexities, and should be required reading for anyone involved in urban studies, planning and governance."

-- Malcolm Miles, Professor of Cultural Theory, University of Plymouth, UK

"The editors have assembled a thought provoking collection of theoretical and empirical essays that offer a broad introduction to the Just City movement of planners and urbanists. Its editors and contributors take us through a comprehensive analysis of the relationships between justice and the lived urban environment."

-- Herbert J Gans, author, IMAGINING AMERICA IN 2033. Robert S Lynd Prof. Emeritus of Sociology, Columbia University

"I found the book a fascinating read"

―J. Barkley Rosser, Jr., Department of Economics, James Madison University

"Notwithstanding the slant of the book toward East Coast secular progressives, this is a provocative collection of articles that readers will find richly rewarding. In the shadow of corporate capitalism and the preoccupation with economic efficiency, in recent decades planners have been almost embarrassed to speak the language of justice. If this book helps to release full-throated calls for urban justice, it will have fulfilled an important function."

-- Todd Swanstrom, University of Missouri-St Louis

"Social justice is back on the urban studies agenda. The authors of essays collected in Justice and the American Metropolis and Searching for the Just City join the chorus of voices arguing that urban policy has focused, for too long, on economic development at the expense of equity."

-- Mark D. Bjelland, Journal of Regional Science
