PreS-Gr 2—More than 20 years after Theodor Geisel's death, a newly unearthed Dr. Seuss book hits the shelves. Discovered in 2013 by Geisel's widow and his assistant, the completed manuscript and accompanying sketches were found in a box containing some of the legendary picture book creator's doodles and notes. Written sometime in the late 1950s or early 1960s, the tale very much reflects the culture of its time: two white siblings go to a pet store and struggle to answer the titular question. The children encounter a menagerie of real and fantastically Seussical animals. The pair bound exuberantly through each spread as they debate the merits of each creature. The rhyme scheme bounces along merrily for the most part, with the exception of a verse concerning a "yent" in a "tent," where the pattern shifts awkwardly, though it picks up steam again with the next page turn. While there is no visual adult presence in this book, readers learn that "Dad said we could have one./Dad said he would pay" and that Mother would not like a "thing on a string" that "would bump, bump into the wall!" A repeated spread depicts four potential pets holding up a banner that reads, "MAKE UP YOUR MIND." There's an ambiguous ending, and readers are left to wonder what pet the siblings finally bring home. Though the discovered manuscript included only black-and-white sketches, this finished work features the deep aqua, sunshine yellow, and vibrant red that were hallmarks of Seuss illustrations of the time period. Random House's Cathy Goldsmith, who was the designer and art director for many of Geisel's titles, worked to capture just the right palette; the good doctor would have been pleased. A note from the publisher reveals a bit of the anxiety associated with publishing a text written more than 50 years ago, "when it was common for people to simply buy dogs, cats, and other animals at pet stores. Today animal advocates encourage us to adopt…." Additional back matter includes anecdotes about a young Ted Geisel and his love of dogs, candid photos, and the story behind the discovery of this volume. THEODOR SEUSS GEISEL—aka Dr. Seuss—is one of the most beloved children’s book authors of all time. Wonderful wonderful book!

Wonderful wonderful book! When I was young, my grandmother gave me the 1st Dr. Seuss book--it had just been published.-and I fell in love with "And To Think I Saw It On Mulberry Street". Consequently, I have in my possession, all but 3 or 4 of his "big" books and many of the smaller "I Can Read" books. My children grew up on these books and now my grandchildren are reading them too--including my 15 year old grandson. When "What Pet Should I Get?" arrived, they all gathered around and we read it together and tried to guess the pet. I hope that more will be found and published! And although I have collected articles about him over the years, the last 8 pages of the book are a wonderful glimpse into the life of a very special man and author!

Go ahead and add it to your collection

It's hard to argue with a posthumous Dr. Seuss book, especially one that features two familiar characters, however, I read this book to two 4-year olds and a 6-year old and watched the puzzlement on their faces at the end when the pet of choice in not revealed. It did elicit a brief discussion about what pet they thought the children chose, but there were no requests for repeat readings. Regardless, the book should take its place in any larger Dr. Seuss collection.

My daughter is infatuated with this book. I read a neg review and I disagree, this might not be Dr. Seuss' best work BUT as an adult I enjoy reading it to my kids. I think it's a great book!

About the Author

Nabil Nassif is affiliated with the Department of Mathematics at the American University of Beirut, where he teaches and conducts research in mathematical modeling, numerical analysis, and scientific computing. He earned a PhD in applied mathematics from Harvard University under the supervision of Professor Garrett Birkhoff.

Jocelyne Erhel is a senior research scientist and scientific leader of the Sage team at INRIA in Rennes, France. She earned a PhD from the University of Paris. Her research interests include sparse linear algebra and high performance scientific computing applied to geophysics, mainly groundwater models.

Bernard Philippe was a senior research scientist at INRIA in Rennes, France, until 2015 when he retired. He earned a PhD from the University of Rennes. His research interests include matrix computing with a special emphasis on large-sized eigenvalue problems.

straight-forward arrangements

Nice variety of songs, most copyright 2010 or later. As a piano teacher, I'd consider this as late-beginner; most pieces in key of C,G,F, D or Bb; 2 staff with melody in right hand; guitar chords included.

I like that it is easier to play music

I like that it is easier to play music, but some songs I played with the youtube video of the actual song and it sounded weird? It was only a few. Most of them were amazing! and I'm sure it is the musician, not the arrangement that sounds weird! (meaning me) thank you!

About the Author

Ralph H. Petrucci

Ralph Petrucci received his B.S. in Chemistry from Union College, Schenectady, NY, and his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin—Madison. Following ten years of teaching, research, consulting, and directing the NSF Institutes for Secondary School Science Teachers at Case�Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OH,�Dr. Petrucci joined the planning staff of the new California State University campus at San Bernardino in 1964. There, in addition to his faculty appointment, he served as Chairman of the Natural Sciences Division and Dean of Academic Planning before retiring from teaching.

F. Geoffrey Herring

Geoff Herring received his B.Sc. and his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry, both from the University of London. He is currently a Professor in the Department of Chemistry of the University of British Columbia, Vancouver. Dr. Herring has research interests in the area of biophysical chemistry and has published over 100 papers in the area of physical chemistry and chemical physics. Recently, Dr. Herring has undertaken studies in the use of information technology and interactive engagement methods in teaching general chemistry with a view to improving student comprehension and learning. Dr. Herring has taught chemistry from undergraduate to graduate levels for 30 years and has twice been the recipient of the Killam Prize for Excellence in Teaching.

Jeffry D. Madura received his B.A. from Thiel College and his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from Purdue University. He is currently Professor and Chair in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry of Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA. Dr. Madura’s research interests are in the area of computational chemistry and biophysical chemistry, and he has published over 70 papers in the area of physical chemistry and chemical physics. Recently, Dr. Madura has undertaken studies in the use of technology and interactive personal response systems in teaching general and physical chemistry with the goal of improving student comprehension and learning. �Dr. Madura has taught chemistry from undergraduate to graduate levels for 15 years and has been the recipient of a Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award.

Carey Bissonnette received his B.Sc. in Chemistry from the University of Waterloo, Ontario and his Ph.D. in Theoretical Chemistry from the University of Camridge. He is currently Continuing Lecturer in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Waterloo. He has won awards for excellence in teaching, including the University of Waterloo’s Distinguished Teacher Award in 2005. Dr. Bissonnette has made extensive use of technology in both the classroom and the laboratory in order to create an interactive environment for his students to learn and explore. For the past several years, he has been actively engaged in undergraduate curriculum development, high school liaison activities, and the coordination of the University’s high school chemistry contests that are written each year by thousands of students around the world.

This book was exactly what I needed and arrived in plenty of time before classes begun. This book cost me $100 less than the book store cost. I'm very thankful and its a great book.
