About the Author
When Linda Hoyt is asked what people should know about her professional career, she is often heard to say, "I'm a teacher. That will always be the heart of my professional work." Though she spent many years as a classroom teacher, reading specialist, curriculum developer, staff developer, and Title I District Coordinator, Linda's passion will always center around vigorous and engaging classrooms where teachers and children learn together. This passion for vigorous and engaged learning has led Linda to create twenty-four professional books and video programs, plus numerous instructional resources for children. A few titles from her multidimensional list of Heinemann publications include Revisit, Reflect, Retell; Make It Real; Interactive Read-Alouds; Solutions for Reading Comprehension; and her newest resources, Explorations in Nonfiction Writing and Crafting Nonfiction. Three of her popular Heinemann video programs include Nonfiction Writing (one for primary and one for intermediate) and Navigating Informational Texts. Linda is a full-time author, consultant, and highly requested speaker at conferences throughout the United States, in Canada, and in Australia. Kelly Davis has thirty years of experience as a general education and special education teacher. She currently serves as a Department of Special Education Resource Teacher for the Howard County Public School System in Ellicott City, Maryland and does consulting.
Jane Beecher Olson is a literacy trainer for special education teachers. She has been a classroom, special education, and Reading Recovery teacher and also does consulting.
Kelly Boswell's combined love for children and literacy has fueled a passion to become a lifelong learner and advocate for striving learners. She has taught first, second, and fourth grade during her eighteen years in education; served as a District Literacy Specialist and K-2 Literacy Coach; and currently works as an educational consultant.

Powerhouse Book!

There are lots of books out there about teaching reading, but most are about generally addressing the needs of all children. This book specifically tackles striving learners and gives multiple solutions to raise their achievement. The book is not really designed to read straight through. The beginning is a "must read" as it focuses on the latest research on what makes an effective, efficient reading program. The main part of the book is divided into three sections: Solutions for Navigating Non-Fiction, Solutions for Comprehending Fiction, and Solutions for Assessment. These are the sections you can skim through as needed. All the sections are designed to help striving learners make abstract comprehension strategies concrete. The book also comes withe a CD-ROM with customizable forms and other helpful hints.
If your general reading program is going well, but you have a few students who are still not making progress, this is a great book with lots of information that you can read quickly and then get on with the business of improving their skills.

One of the best comprehension books on the market

I don't write a lot of reviews but when I find books that offer as much guidance and as many creative solutions as this one does, I feel I need to both thank the authors and let other educators know about it. I find myself returning to this book again and again in my work with teachers. It not only practical (it is clear that each idea has been teacher-tested), but grounded in current research. What I love most, however, is the clear message that all students can learn and that all students need appropriate levels of both support and challenge. This makes Solutions for Reading Comprehension an ideal text for my work in inclusive schools. Bravo to the authors for writing such a useful book that is filled with answers and that communicates a belief in the complexity and competence of all young readers.

Required text for class

As far as required textbooks go, this is one of my favorites. I was required to buy it for my class this semester. I haven't decided for sure, but I think I will keep this textbook after the semester is over. It has a nice, easy to read, layout and has a bunch of great reading intervention ideas for one-on-one, small group, and entire class. This was one of my favorite books this semester.
