Michael Bradley joined his school friend's group in Derry, Northern Ireland in the summer of 1974. They had two guitars and no singer. Four years later the Undertones recorded 'Teenage Kicks', John Peel's favourite record, and became one of the most fondly remembered UK bands of the post punk era. Sticking to their punk rock principles, they signed terrible deals, made great records and had a wonderful time. They broke up in 1983 when they realised there was no pot of gold at the end of the rock and roll rainbow. His story is a bitter-sweet, heart-warming and occasionally droll tale of unlikely success, petty feuding and playful mischief during five years of growing up in the music industry. Wiser but not much richer, Michael became a bicycle courier in Soho after the Undertones split. "Sixty miles a day, fresh air, no responsibilities," he writes. "Sometimes I think it was the best job I ever had. It wasn't, of course."

and must say this is one of the best books I have read

As the author/publisher of Guillotine Magazine I can testify to reviewing more than my share of books, records, etc.....and must say this is one of the best books I have read. It is witty, entertaining and informative. One of the things I particularly liked about Michael Bradley's book was that he had no reservations with "telling it like it is." I had the pleasure of seeing the Undertones at Irving Plaza for their Hypnotized tour in 1980 and later, when they reformed at the Knitting Factory -- they are a great band and this book truly does them justice.

Peter Miller has a big scoop

We are told that the best stories come from people that write about what they know. Therefore, if this story seems insightful it may be because Frederic Forsyth worked for Reuters reporting from London and he wrote the story in hotels from Germany to Austria. He mixes the real, not so real and the plausible to make you think "what if."
I do not want to say much as the fun is being surprised during the reading. However compared to the movie the book is much more in-depth with more characters and details. Manny times you think Forsyth is going off on some tangent and not focusing on the main story; then with out warning the information makes sense later on. One example to look for is the quick encounter with military maneuvers where he describes the tank sergeant.

It is the night of the John F. Kennedy assassination. Peter Miller, freelance reporter in the process of chasing ambulances is disappointed by the apparent suicide of a person of no consequence.
Turns out the dead man is holocaust survivor Salomon Tauber; he left behind a diary of his experiences. Miller reads this diary and seems particularly interested in some details. This inspires him to do a story on what happed to prominent people that where in the "National Socialist German Workers' Party". His quest puts him at odds with many people including an organization, O.D.E.S.S.A, (Organisation der ehemaligen SS-Angeh�rigen), that was designed to help the SS escape justice. He also encounters independent agents out for their own agenda. Then there is the MOSSAD. Everyone accuses Miller of having his own secret agenda and not just out for a story. Can they be right?

May be my Favorite Spy-Thriller

I read "The Odessa File" in its early publication years long ago, and I could not put it down. I watched the movie at least a half dozen times. I have watched for its release as a Kindle selection for months and was thrilled when it became available. It has not lost its master story-telling magic, as I finished the Kindle version in a couple of days. If you like spy thrillers, read it!

41 years of reading the Odessa file

I first read this book in 1972, I recalled it was an excellent reading. Later, I saw the movie, unfortunately, the movie was not so thrilled as the book. Mr Forsyth mixed the facts and fictions in a well written way that brought the readers to their feet. Now, after 41 years, I read it again, and this book still gave me the thrill and excitements as I read it for the first time.

Opaque and turgid.

Using George Orwell's old rule, let me see if I can translate some of Boyer's argument here into single-syllable words:

"As man comes from apes, he learns to see men's souls well. If you know man, you live: if not, you may die. Since to see men helps us live, we learn to see a Man in the Sky as well. And so come gods."

I learned less in forty pages of this book than four pages of William James, but suffered more in four pages than in 400 pages of James. Why do some "social scientists" seem to think they will be paid by the density of their language rather than clarity and fedundity of thought? An excellent reference text for Scrabble words, though.

Of course Boyer dismisses without thought the suggestion that religion might have a basis in any sort of evidence:

"I chose to ignore . . the theolgoical ecumenical approach . . . (which) holds that the assumptions on which many religious systems converge are in fact divinely inspired truths . . . " because he would rather "focus on more directly testable hypothesis."

Do I detech a wink and a nudge here? Of course, if you ignore the possibility of revelation, religioius ideas will appear natural by definition. But on what grounds do we reject a theory merely because the evidence for it may be indirect?

Anyway, I don't think you lose anything much by reading Boyer's more popular Religion Explained instead. It's not only far more readable, it's also one heck of a lot cheaper. I think he's largely mistaken there, too, but at least he is trying in that book to communicate with the reader.

A great study guide!

I purchased this study guide as a gift for a friend who was struggling in pre-nursing classes. She loves it! I had previously bought myself a copy, and I found it very helpful! If you are taking the Hesi exam, you NEED this book!
