Introducing Geology does not talk down to its readers in the slightest, yet most scientific terms are typed in boldface and listed in the glossary to aid comprehension. Chapters cover the basics about all rocks and the Earth's crust, from crystals and gemstones to melted rock found near volcanoes to sediment, geological time, earthquakes, fossils, geology and industry, and much more. Diagrams and color photographs throughout illustrate this first-rate primer.

OK but not great

I bought this book because a long time ago I took a similar course in college and really enjoyed it. When I travel around the US, I like to know what I'm looking at from a geological perspective. This book does offer the basics but two things I don't like are 1) not enough depth and 2) it is written by an english person so most of the remarks refer to sites around the english commonwealth. Very interesting to the english people biut not of much interest to those of us in the US.

The authors point out that the book is somewhat late. Originally thought of in early 2001, in response to the end of the Cold War. But history proceeded to intervene in September of that year. The radical changes in US foreign policy necessitated a complete redirection of the book. But it is still about the US and how Americans perceived and coped with evolving dangers in the world.

Of these, the proliferation of nuclear weapons is a major topic. Another is the spending policies of the US government. Unsurprisingly, an entire chapter is devoted to terrorism. The book summarises and interprets many surveys taken in the last 10 years, about these issues. The surveys were of US public opinion. The motivation of the analyses is to suggest how the government can best present policies and decisions to the public, as well as possibly use the surveys to find the most acceptable policies.

Fun Christmas book with beautiful illustrations

This book begins with a girl writing a letter to Santa. She hasn't finished the letter so we don't see what she's asked for. A few pages later she sees the gifts by the Christmas tree; one small, one medium and one large. When she opens the gifts the small one contains a real cat, the medium one contains a real dog, and the large box houses a real pony. Then we see her play with her new friends in the snow; sledding, making snow angels and snowmen, having a snow ball fight and then curling up by the fire place at the end of the day. The only words in this story are in the letters the girl writes to Santa at the beginning and the end of the book. The illustrations are beautiful and funny at the same time. Great book!

Delightful! - A Very Special Christmas Wish Comes True

In this nearly wordless picture book, a little girl named Sammy writes Santa a letter. Christmas morning arrives and she finds three wrapped gifts (one small, one medium and one large) under the tree. The gifts contain three living animals ... a cat, a dog and a miniature horse! Lonely no more, Sammy and her new animal friends spend their winter days making snow angels, throwing snowballs, building snow creatures, sledding, and baking cookies.

Donovan's book is a fun-filled, imaginative read about a very special Christmas wish that comes true. The adorable scenarios depicted in the painted illustrations are pure fun and kids will delight in the whimsy. For instance, all the animals sleep nestled together under the covers in the little girl's bed. And, my kids loved the cookie baking scene where the horse makes horseshoe-shaped cookies while the cat cuts out fish shapes. For toddlers, the book provides an opportunity to discuss sizes and because it is wordless, they can make up their own story to accompany the pictures. The author based the animals in the book on her own pets, a Siamese cat named Maylee, a Chesapeake Bay retriever named Grizzly and a miniature horse named Fern.

A darling book for my kindergarteners. They are learning English so I was able to discuss these beautiful pictures in detail with size as the main objective for the first read. After a second or third opening of the book the students could tell the story in their own words, making predictions, and assumptions based on these wonderful illustrations. I think anyone will enjoy this book, not just kids.

Great storytelling and instructional at the same time!

All I can say is WOW! This book is pure artistry! I didn't realize that William Redfield, was a man of so MANY talents but he was. I have loved him as an actor since I was a kid and as an adult I look back on all of those performances and appreciate them even more from my 51 year old perspective. He was an actor who studied, took his profession seriously, and didn't get any easy breaks despite that handsome face of his. It appears (although I didn't know him personally of course) that he worked as long as he could even being so ill. He is a personal hero of mine. I can't imagine what it was like to work being ill and I know there aren't many actors who take this work as seriously as he did. From the moment I started reading this book I was truly mesmerized. He has the ability to bring all of this to life. In reading this I felt like I was in the room with Liz and Dick, that I was at rehearsals with all of them, that I was sitting watching Sir John attempt to direct his very strong actors! I feel like I've discovered a new friend -- William Redfield -- because it feels as you read this like he is talking directly to you. That is a GIFT! Not all writers are good writers even when they're published and not all writers can make you feel as if you are THERE with them, in the moment, experiencing it all. I've participated in college and community theater as an actor -- nothing like his experiences of course -- but I can really, really relate to most all of what he is saying here. Again, WOW. We miss you Mr. Redfield. Thanks for sharing your many gifts with us.

One of the best theatre books ever

I can do nothing more than echo the praise of the other reviewers. This very personal account of the rehearsal process and out-of-town tryout of the 1964 Broadway production of "Hamlet" that starred Richard Burton and was directed by John Gielgud is truly fascinating. William Redfield was a superb actor who could also write well, even though there are a handful of passages that perhaps should have been edited out.
I don't know of any book that gives you a better feeling of what it's like to be in rehearsal and trying to piece together a performance as everyone around you is trying to do the same. Redfield's account of a group of major actors--apart from Redfield and Burton, the cast included Alfred Drake, Hume Cronyn, Eileen Herlie, John Cullum, George Rose, George Voskovec, and Barnard Hughes--working under a director of undoubted genius who is somehow not really helping anyone much definitely makes you feel what it must have been like to be part of that.
If you're an actor, a director, or just love theatre, you will probably find this book fascinating.

Great overview of how to monetize your Kindle book

I've read several of John Tighe's books, and I think I like this one best. It's short, simple, and easy to read. I don't think there's anything really new here, but the information is presented well. Some of it is possibly over-hyped, like saying a published author can make $10,000, $20,000, or even $50,000 speaking. I don't think that's possible for most writer's - unless you've got one hell of a platform.

That said, there is a lot of useful information packed in this 93 page volume. It's a great starting point for new and experienced authors who are trying to figure out what's next. How do I make a living in this crazy business?

I got the book for 99 cents but even if you have to pay four or five dollars, you're going to get enough good, usable ideas to make your money back several times over.

My thought is buy this book as a jumping off point. Use it to get ideas, then move on to other books that cover the topics you're interested in more detail. Just remember, writing is a process. Every day, and every book, brings you a little closer to your end point. You're end goal as an author is to hang in there, and complete the journey.

Lately I've been looking into all kinds of avenues: foreign rights, Createspace, Audible, and other ideas. I find it helpful to have books like this one which can help me flesh out some of these ideas in greater detail and help me in my career. This book makes some solid suggestions such as bulk book sales and speaking, two things I have very little experience in but very much want to explore.

Bottom line, if you're serious about making money as an author, you need to be creative about how you package, promote, market, and leverage your books. You have to treat it like a business. I appreciate this effort from John, who writes from solid, in-the-trenches real world experience.

Thanks to John, I can now call myself a bestselling author! I will be forever grateful to the advice and knowledge he shared in Crush It With Kindle and am now learning even more with this installment. John is a master of the Kindle publishing world and understands the confusing journey from dreams and aspirations to full-time writing success. Using his own experiences, John explains strategies in terms that both novices and experts will understand. Especially with "Make Money from Non-Fiction Kindle Books," John makes it clear that there is not solely one way to monetize your work, but thoroughly explains the options so that you can make decisions for yourself. From getting the most out of your royalties to building your email list, John covers all the bases.

This is a great read and a great companion to Crush it With Kindle. For anyone interested in Kindle publishing, I would suggest reading both and taking advantage of all of the wisdom John has to share.

No Train, No Gain

One of the pitfalls of being a training specialist for such a long time is that it is easy to become complacent with your knowledge level and your writing habits. "Training for Dummies," which should be titled "Training for Schmarties" is one of those books that will help you avoid that.

Author, Elaine Biech covers the instructional systems design model (ISD) or A.D.D.I.E., in detail. These are analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. She states the difference between what it means to be a teacher vs. being a trainer. This is one of the only texts I have seen that offers some construction of an instructional design draft, although I wish she would have shown and explained a two-column format in depth. She did provide samples of a three- and four-column format.

Biech goes into overdrive regarding implementation from room set-up, the things that could go wrong, dealing with nervousness, and handling the disruptive influence, all types of them, to mention just a few. She also covers the four (or five if you prefer) levels of evaluation superbly.

One area I was hoping that she would address is how trainers can deal with managers who make disastrous training decisions that will be a supreme waste of time and money, but will blame the trainer rather than recognizing their decision as the reason for failure. (I was once asked to do training to control or reduce absenteeism. Thank God, he had a poor memory)! This is a constant uphill battle for trainers and I see half-hearted training efforts squandered on almost a weekly basis. (If you're out there reading this, no, you can't have Team Building in only one day Why? Because it's not enough time to build teams, dummy)!

I have a few dozen texts on training. If you could only have one of them, this would be the one I would give you. If you're serious about training, it is one book you need to keep on your table instead of your shelf.

Remember...

No train, no gain.

P.S. Don't get overconfident if you have a full seminar in Hawaii or Scottsdale, AZ. They might have other reasons for being there.

Even If You ARE Smart...

Most of the time, people asked to conduct a training event or to become trainers are really smart, really good at what they do, and want to help others become good also. Where the perception that these smart people are "dummies" comes is from the stupid things they do in class, in their small group demonstration sessions, conducting on the job training, or in one-on-one mentoring. It has always amazed me that otherwise smart people can be so dumb when it comes to teaching others what they know.

TRAINING FOR DUMMIES comes to the rescue with a plethora of advice, helpful tools, and resources as well as a clear articulation of WHY you do something (or don't do it) when training. Using Gagne's Nine Instructional Events and other solid, research-based instructional models, TRAINING FOR DUMMIES provides anyone - from novice to experienced trainer - a clear roadmap to success as a trainer.

DO NOT skim this book. Turn to the sections that fit your most pressing need (and there is a ton of them!) and read long, and read deep. Learn how to handle that challenging student as well as understand why that student may be exhibiting "dysfunctional" behaviors when you are working so hard to help them learn. Learn how to organize your thoughts, your interactions with the trainees, and all those things that successful trainers do. It is no wonder this book is endorsed by the American Society for Training and Development (ASTD), it works!

Read it before EVERY class, after every class, and keep it by your bed. At night, read a paragraph or section before you go to bed. In the morning, read it before starting your day. Keep a learning journal nearby to write down questions, insights, or the many ideas TRAINING FOR DUMMIES will inspire. This is a VERY user-friendly book. Your trainees, students, bosses, and fellow trainers will be glad you read it and use its advice!

Slightly Demented, Antic Fun

I wasn't entirely sure about this because the whole pretend-pirate thing felt like it could get too precious. I was pleased to see, though, that the authors knew exactly how to take the silliness right up to the edge and then back off and stay on the rails.

Shivers is a pirate kid, bunny slippers and all. He is afraid of almost everything, (get it? - "Shivers"), but that doesn't keep him from adventuring. His first mate, actually "fishmate", is a goldfish. His best pal, Margo, is a resourceful, no-nonsense girl who keeps everything on a reasonably even keel, (and who is easily a leading character in her own right). It's never entirely clear how much of what is happening is real and how much is Shivers' overactive imagination. (Does he really live on a landlocked pirate ship on a beach? I think so. Was that cannon fire? No, it was microwave popcorn. Did they just make a raft out of beach balls, surfboards and swimmies? Probably.)

MILD GENERAL PLOT SPOILERS. Anyway, Shivers and Margo have to follow rhyming clues to find a treasure, which takes them through a number of increasingly antic set scenes. Then there's a race to the treasure. And a pirate to pirate fight over the treasure, and it all just gets more and more barmy. As you might imagine, the plot itself doesn't make a lot of sense, but this isn't a standard mystery or treasure adventure. It's an excuse for non-stop gags and jokes.

Some of the jokes are of the "And don't call be Shirley..." variety. Some are pretty clever and some are downright inspired. Lots of puns and a fair number of sophisticated deadpan throwaway lines. There's also a fair amount of making fun of the genre and some inside jokes for people who read a lot of these sorts of books. Funny exaggeration is shot through the entire narrative. (Someone dives "head first, then body second, then feet third"; I think that's pretty clever for a kid book.) Of course, we have a lot of gross food, some puking, a few unsavory characters, smelly things, slimy things, weird food, and the like. But the book moves along so quickly, the cross-talk is so fast, and the plot is so manic that we never linger over any one joke or bit of business for more than a line or two. And it's all so lively and good-humored that the kid humor never feels forced or calculated.

So, this is a book that revels in its clever nutty kid friendliness. And it's all so good-natured and positive, (no false or odd steps in the humor or characters), that the reader is happy to go along for the ride. An interesting and appealing find.

It is the sequel to Shivers, the Pirate who is Afraid of Everything. If you are looking for a new, entertaining book -- look no further! Everything ties together and it is very family friendly.

This book was amazing and I LOVED reading how the whole trilogy just comes together. All of my questions were answered and all the pieces to the puzzle fit together perfectly.

I do believe that this was the best book in this series. FINALLY!!! It was time for Caspian's death day and we got to see how Abbey & Caspian had spent their time together. Ooooh La La:) I was so happy about this that it made me have butterflies in my stomach. It was achingly beautiful!

All secrets are revealed by the end of this book and I would have never guessed on any of them. I was happy with the ending, although, it was a little sad, I was still happy with it.

"You," he whispered, bringing his hand to hover by my cheek.

"Are the most beautiful thing I have ever seen."

And then he touched me.

Wow!! What a perfect ending to an amazing trilogy, I couldn't have asked for anything more. Great book, I could not put it down. I am having a hard time thinking of a review without giving anything away, I will do my best to give it justice but to also not let anything at all slip.

This is the best book in the trilogy. Everything is wrapped up. She really leaves you feeling so satisfied with the ending you can't help but smile. Jessica Verday gave me such an amazing ending that I would never have dreamed to have got.

So my question is to you? Do you love YA books, paranormal books, books with no love triangles, books that make you cry but end you with a smile, books with lots of action and mystery and a very sweet love story, a girl you can relate too and who you totally connect with and she never ever makes you want to be like "what the hell are you doing"lol? Well if you said YES, then this is the series for you!!
