A professor of zoology at the University of Vermont, Heinrich here recounts a recent year he spent in the western Maine wilderness. With his pet raven Jack, he began his sojourn at the end of May. His cabin, without electricity or plumbing, sat in a clearing a half-mile up a steep brush-filled hill accessible only to four-wheel-drive vehicles. His mailbox was at the foot of the trail, and his nearest neighbors lived on the road beyond the mailbox. To keep in touch with family and friends, Heinrich, author of the National Book Award nominee Bumblebee Economics, installed a phone and answering machine in the neighbors' outhouse. He takes us through his busy summer and fall of chopping wood and making repairs to the cabin, all the while observing the wildlife around him. He battles with blackflies and mosquitos, mice and cluster flies. In January he conducts an on-site seminar for selected students. For readers who love the outdoors, even vicariously.

Heinrich, a zoology professor at the University of Vermont and the author of Ravens in Winter (LJ 8/89), has written an engaging book about his year of solitude in the southern Maine forest. Recalling Thoreau, he retires to a self-constructed log cabin, without electricity or running water, to study and write. Heinrich's account of the year is divided into four sections, one for each season, beginning with the summer that he set out for his cabin with his pet raven, Jack. Each section consists of small vignettes-some dated, as if from the author's journal, others lessons in biology, ecology, or astronomy. It is a tribute to his writing skill that the author quickly draws the reader into his world. From retrieving the spikes left by some Earth First! activists to making maple syrup to hauling dead calves into the woods for the ravens to feed on, Heinrich is consistently busy, yet he always finds time to run, rest, and meditate on the lessons the forest has to teach. This is a gem of a book. Recommended.

The journal is the form of choice for the neophyte would-be Thoreau. Heinrich is anything but a neophyte, and his journal is far more satisfying. It is what was once called "natural history"--scientific observation by a talented amateur with the "capacity to wonder," who "can spend hours per day wondering about `useless' things, like the tri-partite feather vane on an arrow (rather than one blade for a wing), like how a samara twirls in the wind." Effusions like that arrive after pages of meticulous, lyrical, tough-minded description. Heinrich's accounts of, say, climax forest equilibrium or building an outhouse are clinically scientific or pragmatic as an instruction manual, yet they rouse in us a sense of wonder and a desire to be there, alone in the woods, experiencing what he does, and believing that we could. (We forget he's a professor of zoology.) Some chapters are essays with morals, some reveal Heinrich's personal life, and those about his relationship with a young raven he names Jack deserve to be anthologized widely. Roland Wulbert

Bernd Heinrich does it again

I've read several of Heinrich's books and have never been disappointed. Some reviewers compare him to Thoreau, favorably or not. While in certain places he does evoke thoughts of Thoreau, that is not what he is trying to do, contrary to what some reviewers seem to think.

As a word-class biologist and naturalist, Heinrich approaches his story of life in the Maine woods from two vantage points. First, as a scientist/naturalist, and then as a long-time resident of the area of Maine he calls home. The two themes are interwoven with a seasonal view of life in his cabin.

Unlike Thoreau, who was an amateur nineteenth century naturalist and literary philosopher, Heinrich has the advantage of being both a keen observer and a trained scientist, albeit one who grew up surrounded by nature before receiving his academic research training as a physiological ecologist. While some might find the detail he presents in places to be too much, those who really wish to learn about combining the powers of observation with scientific insights will be richly rewarded.

I must take exception to the reviewer who termed this book an "ego trip".
Heinrich is hardly parading his vast scientific knowledge for the sake of seeming erudite. The man has garnered numerous scientific and literary kudos, for both his research and nature writing, so I suspect he hardly needs to engage in an "ego trip" by trying to ape Thoreau. In fact, given his vast knowledge of biology, I would say that he strikes a good balance between telling a personal story and presenting scientific facts and insights in the context of his experience.

Having spent a few years in the area of Maine that Heinrich loves and writes about so well, I think that he does a wonderful job capturing both the nature and the lifestyle of rural Maine. If you are the type of person who enjoys taking walks in company of expertise, you will enjoy this book.

The crows have it!

One more of Bernd Heinrich books about crows. If anyone is an expert on crows it certainly is he. Who knew of the exceptional intelligence of these unusual black bird. They have taken one a perceived role a dark denizens of the forest. Edger Allen Poe, in a line from his poetry, made famous the oft said line "quoth the raven never more!" Since then ravens have wrongfully been cast as sinister beasts. That couldn't be more wrong. Read the book and see why?

I loved "Mind of the Raven" and couldn't wait for this ...

I loved "Mind of the Raven" and couldn't wait for this since we are spending a month in Maine this fall. I didn't even finish it, however. It does have some beautiful passages and a few interesting chapters, but mostly it is a bit pretentious and, dare I say it, boring. Darn it! I expected more from Heinrich.

He Breaks His Silence!

Suppose you were offered an opportunity to interview Pope Benedict XVI for an hour a day for a series of days. What would you ask him? What format would you like the meeting to have?

This is probably the last opportunity, of a total of four, that Peter Seewald has had to do this. By now, I have listened to all of the interviews. The first interview is Salt of the Earth: The Church at the End of the Millennium, the second was: Light of the World: The Pope, The Church and the Signs Of The Times, and God and the World: A Conversation With Peter Seewald being the third. I was very impressed by these. As with this book, I was interested initially and primarily in this because of the questions that were asked (the issues probed are listed above in the book description). They are ones that we all would probably like answers for. I am very curious. I wanted to hear how Pope Benedict would answer them.

What makes it more interesting, Seewald does not supply the questions ahead of time. He asks. The pope responds. This gives us the chance to hear the Holy Father speak his mind unrehearsed. That's also the way the Pope wants it. It is here that we understand his grasp of the Church and its teachings, mission and history, as well as its problems, shortcomings, difficulties and failures. He hides from nothing. In fact, it is surprising how frank he is in his responses. It is almost as if he sympathizes with Seewald's looking for answers. He gives the Church a certain humanness that is very attractive, something that many are looking for at the parish level.

One of the strongest impressions that he has left in my mind as Pope is that he describes his role, not as you might expect--the world leader of a billion Catholics--but as someone who is to bear witness to Christ. He does not pontificate. Pope Benedict is certainly not a light-weight. His wisdom and understanding of matters is such that he can break things down to people at all levels, including children. I was there witnessing this at World Youth Day in Cologne. It was amazing!

I hope to also read this as an audiobook, which I think always adds to the satisfaction of it. It's not the Pope's voice, but you can imagine! As is the case with many books that I really like, I buy both the audio and either the hardcover or paperback edition. Doing that with a book like this allows me to dive into the text to draw whatever more I can from something like this interview I have listened to.

A great contribution to the Church and to people of all faiths. I believe that this can help greatly in clearing up many misunderstandings people may have.

A great read! A page-turner!

Joseph Ratzinger / Pope Benedict is an Inspiration

Last Testament contains the latest interviews with Pope Benedict XVI (Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, born 1927) conducted by journalist Peter Seewald. Other interview volumes include: Salt of the Earth (1997), God and the World (2002), and Light of the World (2010). This volume includes talk of Ratzinger’s early life up to present day (2016). Again, and again, Ratzinger’s focus on the importance of faith shines through his life. This was a responsibility he accepted and shared with the world. Many details of growing up in Germany were not interesting to me. But his life as a theologian was very interesting especially work surrounding Vatican II and following work from Bishop to Pope. I appreciated hearing a back-room perspective and gained new insights regarding theological development. The interview gives the reader a sense of Ratzinger’s theological development and includes discussion of the German theological environment after WWII. Comments on meetings and influence of Balthasar, Rahner, Kung, and Pope John Paul II were especially interesting. The book allows one to encounter Ratzinger as teacher, philosopher, theologian, and Pope. I also enjoyed learning some of Ratzinger’s personal traits, such as: he prefers to write in pencil and uses his own shorthand, enjoys silence to reflect and a sofa to think, prefers to work during the day and requires a good night’s sleep. There are small gems throughout the book that touch on many areas of interest for each individual reader. Every chapter may not be interesting and may appear too detailed, but my overall take-away is very positive. The book includes a timeline of Ratzinger’s life, but not an index.

A wonderful, inspiring read

Full disclosure: I am a great Ratzinger fan, and I think hat he is one of the most important Christian theologians of the last half century. Normally I read his theological works, so it was a particular pleasure to read this extended interview which, at a relaxed but insistent pace, takes us through some of this beautiful person's life and thoughts.

I doubt whether the popular misconception of Ratzinger as cold and aloof will survive a reading of this book.

Simple, accessible and effective

Good book for a referance

I am a beginner at running CNC machines and I do have a few "gaps" in my understanding, especially, on how the machine thinks and how the referance datums are read. I have not read it through, but have thumbed through it in preview and I like what I see, it covers a lot of the foundational techincal things needed to sucessfully operate a CNC machine and machine good parts.

Awesome book, but watch for Errata!

This is a decent book. I was runing Okuma VMC's and this book helped me pave the way to running 4th and 5th axis Fanuc Robodrills at a new shop. As I am learning new things at the new job I find myself returning to this book to re-educate myself and "bone-up" on various topics. There are some really impressive MACHINISTS at my new job and thanks to this book and my sincere desire to give this career everything I've got I've been learning a ton of stuff over the last 6 weeks. My only grip is that it needs a lot of editorial work. At my last shop my "mentor" and I sorted out some pretty bad errata. Need to clean up this edition and ADD A CD with a digital copy of the book like Smid's other classic "CNC Programming" which has helped me immensely in understanding things like Helical Interpolation amongst many other things. A-dios

About the Author
Rich Erixon has been a teacher of young writers for over a decade, and a practitioner of prose and poetry for quite a bit longer. His career as a Humanities teacher has also given him a strong understanding of the rise and fall of various types of governments, and a fascination with how dictators and totalitarian governments can come to control large groups of seemingly rational people. "Dancing...the very heart of life and all its hopes."

Set in Donegal in 1936, during Ireland's change from an agrarian to a more industrial economy, this screenplay of Brian Friel's haunting ensemble drama, on which Frank McGuinness collaborated, tells the story of five sisters and their priest brother in the rural community of Ballybeg on the eve of the harvest festival of Lughnasa. Forty-ish Kate, who sees herself "in charge," is the only real wage earner in the family. Rigid, severe, and completely lacking in humor, she believes pagan celebrations, such as Lughnasa, which provide fun and enjoyment in the countryside, are "uncivilized."

Her brother Jack, the priest, however, on furlough from his missionary work in Uganda, is now virtually a pagan himself. His work has shown him the need of the poor for happiness, dancing, and community celebration, even if it is not church-sanctioned. The other Mundy sisters help illustrate the ironic chasm between Kate's attitudes and those of Fr. Jack. Maggie, the fun-loving, free-spirited, and most humorous of the sisters, constantly bursts into song and dance and longs to go to the town dance. Christina feels no shame whatever about her son, a love-child, and thoroughly enjoys the summer visit of his father, Gerry Evans, with whom she dances spontaneously.

Aggie and Rose, who earn small wages knitting gloves, work tirelessly as the family's sad, "unpaid servants," constantly chafing against Kate's imposition of her own values on them. When the local priest fails to rehire Kate because of Fr. Jack's apparent paganism, the family is devastated, but it is at that moment that they recognize the need to celebrate life itself.

The message in this screenplay is weaker than in the stage play, with much less criticism directed at the "clan of the round collar" and its harsh edicts. Kate is less hostile in the film, and the fates of Aggie and Rose are withheld until the end, for dramatic reasons, and not revealed early, as in the play. Fr. Jack's paganism, regarded as a mental aberration in the screenplay, is treated empathetically in the play, which, though dark, is ultimately a joyful celebration of life itself, a life not bound by organized religion. The film, perhaps in the interest of not offending its audience, suppresses this point of view, presenting a less assertive, and perhaps less realistic, viewpoint. n Mary Whipple

Benchmark for Modern Day Black Panther Stories

When a Marvel character is announced for the big screen, you know an incoming of new printings is inbound to be published. With his first appearance next year in Captain America: Civil War and his own film in 2017, Black Panther is a character long over due for the spot light. Which, you would think being the first African American superhero in comics would get you more respect than some other characters since appearing in 1966.

So goes with a quick recap: T'Challa, AKA Black Panther ; King of Wakanda, an African nation with some of the most wealthiest and advanced technology in the world thanks to it being the location of vibranium, one of the most sought after minerals in existence. Black Panther is super hero for the Avengers and leader/monarch figurehead to the Wakandan people. Now that means there have been numerous interpretations of the character throughout the years, but it wasn’t until the character was relaunched in 1998 series under black writer Christopher Priest where he became the modern day version everyone uses now. And yes, it’s a pleasant offering for new and old readers on Black Panther.

Collecting issues #1-17 (, BLACK PANTHER BY CHRISTOPHER PRIEST VOL.1 COMPLETE COLLECTION shows T'Challa comes to America to investigate the kidnapping and murder of a little girl who was affiliated with a Wakandian charity group. Tensions are high for Wakanda having a civil war back home, but T’Challa feels he needs to investigate this himself even with problems in his home land. So T’Challa brings his own entourage of body guards including Zuri, a hulk-like fighter and two teenage assassin’s named the Dora Milhje, with government agent Everett K. Ross is assigned as an escort to assist and keep relations with Wakanda. He figured it would be easy work and just tailed along with the King's entourage. But things go crazy quickly as Black Panther has been setup, his home country been taken over from his absence, and the lord of Hell, Mephisto, has something to do with all of it.

Various versions of Panther existed before Priest took control like the 70’s being very serious and reflective, to Jack Kirby being over the top. Priest reverts Panther more akin to Stan Lee’s original version being able to outsmart the likes of Reed Richards (who is one of the smartest characters in the Marvel Universe) and go toe-to-toe with The Thing, while adding a some of his past versions as to no alter the character’s rich history. This makes Priest work on Panther parts urban vigilante, political thriller, and even satire.

The first twelve issues are one tightly woven story of Black Panther dealing with the kidnapping case and reclaiming Wakanda, while issues #13 through #17 are single/two issue tales of Panther teaming up with various Marvel characters that are quite amusing to see the interaction with. This is made up for the narration of the stories by Everett K. Ross, who speaks through his observations in a highly comical and witty method to his superiors (for example he loses his pants in front of Mephisto and by accidently selling his soul for pants, he just keeps unzipping his pants to have another pair on). He’s a coward and a bit dumb, as well as explains his stories in a non-linear narrative akin to the Quentin Tarantino film, Pulp Fiction (which even his superior mentions this). So while Ross is the comedic relief and narrator, Black Panther or “the Client” as Ross says, is the straight man with very little to say. It’s a great way to counter balance the vibe for readers.

And because Panther is the straight man, Priest makes Panther very much like DC’s Batman in his abilities and gadgets, his overall look, and insane strategist skills in keeping 10-steps ahead of everyone, so much so that he admits to joining the Avengers just so he can keep an eye on them if they were a threat to Wakanda . Even his new villain Achebe, looks and acts an awful lot like DC’s Joker with a large grinning smile and crazy habits. This Batman-esque Black Panther has become the standard for modern day writers to inhabit that makes this a worthwhile read, being more about using his smarts and being open to the world.

The art supplied from the first 5 issues is Mark Texeira, Vince Evans doing the second story arc with Joe Jusko and Mike Manley, with Sal Velluto doing the rest. The art is great that ranges from gritty to comical (like issue #8 having an ode to Stan Lee/Jack Kirby flashback sequence). It’s overall good stuff. With the addition of the Marvel Knights Sketchbook extras that give numerous drawings and interviews to Priest on the character that are worth reading.

Now I know my Amazon rating is 5 stars, but I’m scoring it around 4 � stars. The only problems I had were the storytelling method Priest uses like Pulp Fiction is confusing at first. In fact, it’s used predominantly throughout his whole run on Black Panther. It does ease up in later issues, but the shifting story might not jive well with some readers. And the second aspect might be the racism aspect some readers might get. What I mean by this is the dichotomy between Ross and Panther that some sources have pointed out throughout the years. Ross is the bumbling white guy who gets chased down the White House by the Present of the United States while Black Panther is the cool-headed, rich super hero. I personally didn’t get that vibe, as well as Priest himself not portraying dumb ethnicities. He even goes so far as to have a few scenes where black characters try to sway Panther into a symbol for African Americans, which Panther shoots this down and looks at all lives, regardless of skin color, being vital to life. But I just wanted to point that out if any new readers get that feeling. And the notion of Black Panther being a Batman-like clone might gel well either (even if both characters have different upbringings and motives).

Still, I’m glad Marvel decided to reprint these fine stories. They are exciting, funny, and even insightful to still read about and make Black Panther stand out from the other characters. It was ground-breaking stuff back in the day, which you can see why he has become a powerful figure in modern Marvel comics thanks to Priest work on the character. Well with Black Panther making his film debut next year, this is the first collection to be released to lead up to next year. The first two trades (Black Panther Vol. 1: The Client and Black Panther: Enemy Of The State TPB) are out of print and pricey, with much of Priest work uncollected before. So with writing a whopping 62-issues, there is plenty of Black Panther material on the way.

An Important Collection for A Thoroughly Important Character

Not much that I can add to this list of reviews that hasn't already been said. Except for explaining the Title of this review. I've been labeled Peter Pan by coworkers because of my growing collection of graphic novels & comics...a medium of storytelling I couldn't afford as a little boy in the Caribbean but can spend "vast" amounts of money on now as an adult. In my 33 years of life & 27 years of reading I'd never come across a character as important (to me) as T'Challa: a dark-skinned super-hero who's a KING, noble, powerful, cunning and (according to many of the female characters herein) sexy. I found Hudlin's (Who Is) Black Panther volume by chance, which sent me to pick up this Collection 1 by Priest. Priest's writing (for me) set a standard. There are some plot twists that I didn't see coming, with BP having double- and triple-crossed many of the enemies he encounters...there are (still relevant) explorations of race with regards to how "white" America sees "black" America and how darker-skinned Americans see themselves...using Everett Ross as the narrator and (according to Priest) voice of not only white America but ALL of comic fandom with regards to how he/we saw the BP character to that point was genius...the invention of the deadly Dora Milaje and the innate conflicts that come with having two deadly, teenage body-guards who were also (only in theory, Ross reminds us) concubines, was brilliant and made sense given the tribal make-up of Wakanda and T'Challa's status as King. My one criticism, writing-wise, is the consistent reliance on an in media res opening to many of the stories which results in stale flashbacks and "oh, let me explain how we got here" moments. The art is the only inconsistency, with the opening artist leaving soon after the first arc. The final artist in this collection is perhaps my least favorite, but none of the art is bad.
T'Challa is an important character because--not to beat a dead horse--he's the first African Marvel super-hero, who beats the Fantastic 4 in his introduction, who is as powerful as Capt America (who respects him as an equal & a friend), who is loyal, smart, royal, noble to a fault, has no racial inferiority complex, is not afraid of any power structure or government, who'll kill but only if he finds it absolutely necessary, who cares about his people as well as others, and who is just plain AWESOME at his job...or, in other words, the ANTITHESIS of what the media has portrayed dark-skinned men to be over the past 200 years, and what some dark-skinned people have believed about themselves over that same time period. Regardless of their reasoning (expected sales boosts, pre-cursor to the announced BP movie, whatever else) I'm happy Marvel decided to finally release Priest's run on BP, even if the quality did taper off toward the end of it back in the late 90's/early 2000's. This is the collection and the character I will definitely introduce first to my children whenever they decided to poke at or thumb through their father's comic collection.

Equal parts West Wing/Pulp Fiction/Coming to America

Priest's work here firmly established the Black Panther as a force to be reckoned with in the Marvel Universe. As smart as Iron Man, as tough as Captain America; Panther was moved out of the background for fans who thought of him as another affirmative action Avenger. Instead, he's portrayed as a stranger in a strange land as a tribal head of state searching for justice for his people in our chaotic country. This series gives great depth to the Panther's country of Wakanda, bringing it to logical conclusions without shunning years of continuity. Also, it brings with it a rich cast of supporting characters. Not the least of whom is the readers P.O.V. character: Everett K. Ross, an infinite source of racial awkwardness and misunderstanding.

Equal parts West Wing, Pulp Fiction and Coming to America, the book's writing is socially, racially and politically irreverent fun*. While the narrative's linear jumble can be challenging at times but reads better here for all being in one place. Additionally, the books starts off with a gorgeous run of painted artwork before switching over to an animated style and then settling in on more traditional comic styles. This doesn't help narrative troubles, especially in regards to the political intrigue aspects of plot. But, really, this is my only complaint about this book.

I am eagerly anticipating the next two volumes to this story and hope for a final and fourth installment. When my friends ask why they should be excited about an upcoming Black Panther movie, this is what I'm going to push in their direction. It's a gorgeous collection and one I've been waiting ten years for.

*For fans concerned about the racial undertones of this story, I feel fairly confident in saying that many stereotypes are skewered. The author of these works is African American and fairly vocal about what the work meant to him. You can google him and find numerous discussions he's held on the topic. A Gem!

My first experience with the late James Herriot's inspirational books took place in a bookstore in Singapore, in the 80's. I was barely 14 & had not heard of this writer/vet. But as soon as I started reading All Things Wise and Wonderful - my very first JH book, I knew I had to get the rest of the series.
Through his poignant, funny, sensitive and Yorkshire-accented writing, I relived his world as a practising vet. His was a world where decent, civic minded people lived with much love & respect for their pets and farm animals. A world where I wanted/want to be in.
It is true how one book reviewer put it: every chapter will have you either laughing out loud or shedding a quiet tear. To this day, I still remember some of his stories that touched my heart. The courtship years when a young JH was trying to impress Helen (who eventually became his very supportive wife); the timid little black stray cat, who with her last breath, would placed her one surviving kitten into the hands of a caring family; the endearing 'beggar' dog; the bored, pampered & misunderstood pet dog of a wealthy spinster...I could almost touch and see JH's characters through his vivid writing. I even felt his pride when his daughter also became a vet, & his son a doctor.
I am sorry that there were not more of his wonderful tales.

I would give all of his books more than 5 stars if I could!

If you want a book that will take you back to the country life and its people with all their foibles and admirable qualities and love animals then his books will be pure enjoyment! I love the way he tells his stories. In his stories, he doesn't ever claim to be the best veterinarian around (I think he underrated himself), but you know he is a wonderful, kind, animal and people loving person. The way he speaks about the people and animals he comes in contact with, come to life and you feel you are right there with him. You will laugh, maybe cry, and cheer him on as you read. If you have animals, or raise them, you will love his books, although you don't have to own any to appreciate them.

A wonderful end to a fabulous series of books!

I have read each of James Herriot's books many times (including this one) and still enjoy them every time I read them! This book is one of my favorite books of the series, and is highly recommended by me. If you have read the other books you will love this one just as much if not more! If you have not read any of the other books, this book would also be a good one to start off with. After reading it I can assure you that you will want to read all the others. NOTE: I also have all five of these books on audio tape (by Christopher Timothy) and would recommend these as well! It is great to listen to them while you do hobbies since you can actually do two things at the same time, and Christopher Timothy (who played James Herriot in the BBC series) really brings the characters to life, using different voices and accents.
