About the Author
Carl H. Hamann:
Following his studies in mathematics, physics, biology and economics in Hamburg and Bonn, graduating in 1966 as a physicist, Carl H. Hamann gained his doctorate in 1970, becoming Professor for Applied Physical Chemistry at the University of Oldenburg in 1975. He has since concentrated mainly on fuel cells, electrochemical metrology, passage and adsorption kinetics, turbulent flows, the thermodynamics of irreversible systems, preparative electroorganic chemistry and technical electrochemistry. Professor Hamann has thus far published some 80 articles in journals and books.

Wolf Vielstich:
As Heinz Gerischer's first student, in Gottingen in 1952/53, Wolf Vielstich was concerned with developing a fast Potentiostaten while determining exchange current densities. Upon starting work at the Institute for Physical Chemistry, Bonn University, in 1960 he demonstrated that, apart from mercury, reproducible cyclic voltamograms, such as for the oxidation of hydrogen and methanol, are contained in solid electrodes, including Pt, Ir, Rh, Au and Pd. There then followed experiments with methanol/air and NiMH cells, among others. He was always interested in developing novel methods, such as the rotating ring electrode, on-line MS (DEMS), in-situ FTIRS and UHV analysis of adsorbants. Between 1986 and 1993, Wolf Vielstich was the Coordinator of the first European project to develop a DMFC, and in 1998 he was awarded the Faraday Medal by the Royal Chemical Society. Since 1999 he has been working as a guest of the Universidade de Sao Paulo, and edited Wiley's Handbook of Fuel Cells (2003).

Professor Hamnett graduated from the University of Oxford with a BA (Chemistry) in 1970 and a D.Phil. (Chemistry) in 1973. He has held research and academic positions at the University of British Columbia, Canada, and at Oxford and Newcastle Universities, England, before his appointment in January 2001 as Principal and Vice-chancellor of the University of Strathclyde. He has nearly 200 publications in books and scientific journals, covering areas of spectroscopy, quantum theory and electrochemistry. His primary academic interests in recent years include the development and utilisation of spectro-electrochemical techniques in electrochemistry, and the development of improved fuel cells and solar-energy conversion devices.

This is a REFERENCE text

If you have a class that requires this textbook, drop the class.

This is the second worst textbook I have had the displeasure of every purchasing, and it only beats out the first by a slim margin because the other than more typographical errors than this.

You don't -learn- when reading this textbook. The information isn't structured in a way that is conducive to learning. This is the kind of textbook you look at after you understand everything within it, and want to refresh your memory on that one equation you suddenly find yourself needing, without explanation of its background nor in many cases the constants that make it up.

Unless you have an absolutely stupendous teacher, in which case the purchasing of this book is pretty much worthless sans the chapter problems that might be assigned, you will NOT learn anything.

Terrible Book

As one of the other reviews has stated, this is a terrible book if you want to learn electrochemistry. Electrochemical Methods: Fundamentals and Applications by Bard and Faulkner is a vastly superior text book and explains concepts much clearer than Hamann. Hamann does go a little bit more in depth into thermodynamic concepts but Bard and Faulkner is the way to go.

A good book if you want to know a little more application of electrochemistry. It doesn't have a nitty gritty detail of theory but it was helpful for me to get ideas about some practical applications of the area.

The author, host of ESPN’s Sport Science, begins with Roger Bannister’s 1954 breaking of the four-minute mile. Many people had seriously wondered if this landmark could ever be achieved, but after Bannister did it, more than 300 people followed suit over the next decade. That happened not only because Bannister proved it could be done (and so inspired others to try) but also because human beings are getting faster and stronger, and athletic techniques are constantly being refined and augmented. The book is full of startling facts: the current U.S. record for holding one’s breath, for example, is a breathtaking 7 minutes and 21 seconds. But here’s the book’s most arresting element: using a variety of disciplines, including physics and physiology, Brenkus extrapolates into the future, showing us when we will reach our absolute limit of performance. For example, he posits that the fastest time a human will ever post in the hundred-yard dash will be 8.99 seconds, about 900 years from now (he also explains why this will be the absolute limit); similarly, somewhere around 2672, breath-holding ability will top out at about 14 minutes and 47 seconds. Fun book. A must for sports fans.

My 14-year old science-loving son enjoys watching "Sport Science" clips on YouTube, plus he constantly asks questions about the limits of human performance. What is the highest possible dunk? The fastest possible 100m? The mightiest possible power lift? I thought that this book would be a definite hit for him. We pre-ordered the book and it arrived yesterday. I got a chance to read it before my son got home and knew that he would really enjoy it. When he saw the book he immediately rushed to read it. Of course, he wanted to just get to The Numbers at first:) John Brenkus (who is the host of Sport Science) does a wonderful job of making this topic fun and interesting, plus he does a nice job on the analytical bits where he explains how he (or rather the experts he quotes) actually get to The Numbers.

One quibble: The book keeps on going on about what we could theoretically eventually achieve in time, but - hey - we will be a different species by then given our rate of evolution. Huh? According to one expert, we are a different species than we were 200 years ago and we will certainly be a different species in a 1000 years. Hmmm. Strange.

Remember this book is full of statistical models about theoretical maximums. [Note: I am a statistician by training so I appreciate statistical models for what they are.] There is certainly no guarantee that humans will reach these theoretical maximums, but remember these are just that - theoretical maximums. A human will NEVER run a 100m faster than 8.99 seconds. Will he ever reach the theoretical maximum? Maybe, maybe not. He will approach the theoretical maximum, but he never will surpass it because he never can surpass it due to human limitations. (This is where the different species stuff comes in; a different species of human - one more "evolved" - would have different limitations, and, thus, different theoretical maximums and all that).

Now that man has goals to aim for, he will certainly have a better shot at reaching the theoretical maximums. Thank you, John Brenkus, and good luck, mankind!

A good read, informative and fun

I enjoyed this book. I picked it up at the library after reading the review in the Wall Street Journal, who liked it too. I like that there are self-contained chapters, that you don't need to read all of them. It's also really interesting to put your guess in at the start of the chapter. Chapters I enjoyed the most were the 100-yd dash, how far a golf ball can be hit, and how high can a basketball rim be that can still be dunked on.

If you like sports, and like sports science, then you will like this book.

543 Yards: The Limit Off The Tee

Records are made to be broken, or so it is said. At some point, however, one can run into the limits of physics and human physiology. It's probably not possible for a baseball player to hit a home run that travels a mile, for example. Why? Because the momentum the baseball would needed to overcome the air resistance over the course of a 5,280 foot home run could not be produced by a human, whether on steroids or not. That would simply exceed what we are designed to do.

We can do the math, if you like, but I'll warn you, your eyes would glaze over, so I will skip it for now.

Or, alternatively, we can let someone else do the math and we can look at their results.

John Brenkus, the host and executive producer of ESPN's Sport Science did just that to provide a hard look at the absolute limits of human performance. In a new book, Brenkus finds the "Perfection Point" for several sports, golf included, by determining the speeds, heights, distances that mark the limits of human performance. To do this, he used statistics, physics, and physiology to uncover the limits for the longest golf drive, among other sports, such as the longest home run, the fastest time for a mile in track and field, the heaviest bench press in weightlifting, etc.

Brenkus results are not a dry math and physics lesson suitable only for a university lecture to engineering students, instead, his illustrations are not only informative, they are quite entertaining and easily understandable.

In the world of golf, Brenkus's examination for driving the ball found a 543 yard theoretical limit, a 23% increase (125 yards) from the current record of 418 yards held by current long-drive champion Jamie Sadlowski. Brenkus states that Sadlowski has slight technical flaws in his swing, and that correcting them would add another 17 yards to the 418 yard record. He also notes that with more flexibility, added height and yes, more muscle, more yards can be added to reach his calculated limit.

Outstanding-as truthful as it gets and easy to read

This book was outstanding. I would like to say, that I am a Catholic Christian who had an addiction to pornography and it was about to destroy my marriage. I have been porn-free since September 17, 2011. This book has ten stories of people who were like me, addicted to pornography or involved in pornography. It feels like a little bit of every story in this book is part of my story. Overcoming pornography was (and still is) hard for me, it has been literally the hardest thing I have ever done, but my marriage was worth being rid of it. I can truly say how much happier of a person I am without it. The stories in this book are short (about ten pages each) and you can actually read it in a day if you tried hard enough. The stories bring us into the deep emotions and struggles of what this "forbidden fruit" brings to the world. I do not want to ruin any of the stories and give them away, but if you open your ears and listen to these stories, they can change your life. If you want the truth about pornography, what it does to families, and what lies in the industry, and have been wanting to be rid of it in your life, then this book shows that miracles do happen and marriages and families can be saved.

SLAVERY STILL EXISTS - JESUS IS FREEDOM

Whether pornography is a struggle for you or not, this book is for EVERYONE. Whether you are a user of porn or are suffering in a relationship with someone who is using porn - PORN IS NOT A HARMLESS,VICTIMLESS ENTERTAINMENT- this book brings HOPE!
Today, addictions are on the rise, surpassing all other "ailments". If you add "abusive use" into the equation, then few are left untouched, either using themselves or loving someone who is using. The pain of this world, the sins of others, and our own personal sins can only be overcome by facing the truth and at the same time, allowing the deep love of God to hold us in the midst of that truth. We are not alone. Jesus came to reveal God our Father's love. He is Whom we seek. It is His love and union with Him that we long for. Self medicating through use of alcohol, drugs, porn, and other sexual sin only deepens shame and open's the mind and heart (like a Front Door!) to the menacing life-robbing thief "who prowls the world seeking the ruin of souls." This is a seductive allurement; initially it may feel good, like you are in control, you can "take care of yourself." I doubt few realize that this path will not lead to life and peace - rather, each use is a heavy chain binding, constricting, deepening the pain until, even the idea of a different life seems lost. A soul-death suffocating hope, stealing the day and terrorizing the night can set in....you find yourself living in Hell. BUT Jesus came to set the prisoner free! His Love can Transform, Heal, Re-create, yes - even raise the DEAD. I know. I was once dead inside. Jesus set me free and continues to renew my heart and mind in His Word and Sacraments. Wherever you are, no matter how deep the pit, He will go lower, UNDERNEATH YOUR PAIN, to rescue you.
The personal witnesses and honest retelling of each one of these people's life experience deeply touched me. I have already bought several copies and given them to others, including a couple of priests. I hope to help bring a wide distribution (if it is God's Holy Will) to my parish. I pray more and more people will discover DELIVERANCE through this book.
This little book will not only raise your awareness of the pervasive problem that porn is, but will ENCOURAGE you.
Jesus's love penetrates the darkest night. the loneliest heart. the coldest. cruelest suffering.
My sincere "THANK YOU!" to each person who offered their heart and energy to giving

Let me start off by saying that I had never heard of porn described as an addiction. I had this idea that it was the sort of thing that certain kinds of people chose to do and that they were completely to blame for their choice and deserved what they got. I didn't really know much about it except that I thought it was an evil thing that evil people with seedy backgrounds did. At any rate, I would certainly never be caught dead associating with such people. Imagine my shock in reading this book where some stories featured individuals who were raised in "loving Christian families!" Worse, that some carried on with their lunacy even as they continued to go to church. I am still incredulous that they could have gone wrong so terribly, but, I ask myself, who would want to make up such frightful stories about themselves?!? They must be true...I was so filled with horror at the stories I read in this book that I could not even finish it. But I also began to feel compassion for these people, whereas in the past, I had only felt disgust and loathing when I heard about people engaged in pornography - almost as if they were a different species. This book has revealed their humanity. I admire the courage it took for them to come forward and share their struggles, so that others may know that there is hope for healing and reconciliation. I am grateful to them for revealing how widespread this menace is and that no one is immune to its perils. Their stories have made me a more vigilant parent, and I hope, a more compassionate individual.
