Loved the story

I fell onto this book on Facebook. I never heard of the author or series. I do love a good shifter book, especially wolves, and it was on sale so I thought.. Why not.
I'm really glad I did because I loved it. The first paragraph about Candace being carried off by Kellan and his 2 friends really got me. I was drawn in to see what they would do with her. I could hardly put my Kindle down.
I have to go back to book 1&2 and see the beginning of this series. I started on #3 but immediately bought the first two books.
I need to see why Candace's father basically threw her at Kellan. I'm missing some facts.
All 3 friends were going to mate with Candace but when the time came only Kellan did. They were true mates. Not to say Brett and Dane lost out... You'll have up read to find out what happens...

This is supposed to be a MC but nothing happened in this book other than a trip to Sturgis, so I'm not sure how that fits in yet.
Also all packs are supposed to go to Sturgis but Candace's father's pack doesn't go. I'm not sure why.
There is a great set up for book 4 which is releasing soon and I'll be buying it too. I definitely recommend this book. The storyline is great, the characters are well thought out and it's addicting.

Now for what I didn't like. The grammar & spelling are atrocious. Words are missing altogether, words are misspelled, and I'm not talking a couple. I'm talking DOZENS. It was very distracting to have to go back and reread because a sentence didn't make sense.
I believe if you are going to take the time to outline, write and pour yourself into a book the last thing you MUST do it edit. Even if you have a friend proofread for you, it HAS to be done.
This would have been a 5 star book if there were not so many careless mistakes.

Melanie Moll ist seit 2007 Direktorin der Deutschkurse bei der Universit�t M�nchen e.V. Von 2001 bis 2007 war sie Wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin an der LMU M�nchen.

The First Book of its Kind

What I like about this book:

This is a textbook for academic writing in German. There have been textbooks for academic writing in English out for ages, but finally, there has been a recognition that German students need the same thing. The Preface indicates that the book is a compilation of material that was developed at LMU Munich to help students come to terms with academic writing. And although you can see how this was done, it does function well as a book and is clearly structured. Graefen is a competent linguist (her journal articles are worth reading) and this comes through in her detailed use of real texts in exercises and examples. The exercises are useful and intelligent. The vocabulary lists give you many options for formulating things elegantly. It focuses on the so-called "allt�gliche Wissenschaftssprache" (that is, the linking language that is used to join technical expressions - 'to treat a topic', 'to view something from a particular perspective', 'According to Rosner, this is due to...' etc.) which means that it is tied to no particular field and will be useful to many different students (though linguistic articles, given the authors' backgrounds, do predominate). Grammatical usage (function not form) is explained in detail. Solutions to the exercises are available on the author's website. Just what the doctor ordered.

What I dislike about this book:

Occasionally, there seem to be areas where some topics are treated and others are ignored. Certain words are given a whole section, but only a handful and I suspect that there are many more that could have been discussed but weren't. That said, the book is the first of its kind so I always expected a smaller scope than something that may appear in the future. But I have few complaints. In the future, I hope a comparative English-German academic writing textbook will come out for the many students who write well in English and need to transfer their skills across languages. This book is mainly aimed at students who have never done high level technical writing before.

Where to from here:

Your German really does need to be up at the high B2/C1 level for this to be of any use to you, both because of the subject matter and because the entire book is in German. You also need to want to learn the skill of academic writing. If you are looking for a textbook specifically on academic usage, this is the one. If you still need to work on the grammatical forms that come up regularly in German academic usage, look somewhere else first.

About the Author

Woodrow Barfield, PhD, JD, LLM, has served as professor of engineering at the University of Washington, Seattle, Washington, where he received the National Science Foundation Presidential Young Investigator Award. Professor Barfield directed the Sensory Engineering Laboratory, where he was involved in research on sensors and augmented and virtual reality displays. He has served as a senior editor for Presence: Teleoperators and Virtual Environments and is an associate editor for Virtual Reality. He has more than 350 publications and presentations, including invited lectures and keynote talks, and holds two degrees in law.
