A deep look at learning to teach

As a teacher, I would argue that learning to teach is one of the most challenging and life-changing endeavors one can undertake. As Larkin demonstrates in this book, teachers don't just acquire a set of skills, they fundamentally change who they are. The case studies in this book make this transformation visible and show it for what it is - a highly personal journey of self examination. In an age where talk about teachers is often reduced to `value added' calculations, teacher `accountability', and state summative ratings, this book is a breath of fresh air. The educators in this book are looked upon as human beings - with all of their unique perspectives, beliefs, opinions, ideas, past experiences, and hopes as the raw interconnected material out of which learning is produced.

Along the way, Larkin is on the look out for patterns and moments of significant conceptual change, which he points out so that teacher educators might use this work to help shape teacher education programs. Considering that teachers' ideas will shape their practice, learning more about how concepts change in the minds of teachers is an important step toward creating more equitable and meaningful science education. Larkin's work will certainly point educators in the right direction.

This is my first ever review on Amazon. I'm hesitant to give anything a perfect score, but this book deserves it.

A couple of months ago I was investigating using docker for a new project. Docker is simple enough, but to really leverage its true potential there are many things that need to be incorporated into one's development processes. It dawned on me that we really need to adopt Continuous Delivery, but we didn't really know how to get there. My organization practices CI, but there is quite a gap between the output of that process and actual delivery.

So I started looking around for information about CD. I wanted to know the nitty-gritty details; if we committed to CD, just what were we committing to? I was disappointed by the materials that were most readily available. There were plenty of resources extolling the virtues of CD, but I wanted to know what kinds of problems a team typically encounters?

I don't recall what magic combination of terms I put into google, but I eventually found this book. Its detailed description was promising - basically answering every question that I knew I had. I was skeptical that the book would actually address all of the topics in sufficient detail, but I ordered it anyway.

I have to say this book is exactly what it say it is. It answered almost every question that I had. I really liked the way the author presented the material. The entire point of CD is to automate *everything*, but the author doesn't start his explanations after everything is already automated. Instead, he works through the principles. Once the reader is familiar with the fundamentals of the given problem, *then* is the solution automated.

I will say that I contacted the author a couple of times, asking for opinions on certain topics the book did not address specifically. His responses were thorough and fast. If there is such a thing as post purchase customer service, this guy does it.

So yeah. I fully recommend this book. I've been telling friends and coworkers about it. If you're a developer that is even vaguely aware of most of these tools, then this stuff won't exactly blow your mind. The real value in the material isn't in some epiphany for the reader; instead its in the application and integration of open source projects to accomplish real work.

I haven't read it all yet but for the sheer effort of describing the automation "thinking" process with implementation details in less than 500 pages is a huge achievement in itself. I transitioned into my new role as a dns engineer with a significant amount of Devops from web development recently and this book is a treasure trove of not only the philosophy of automation and continuous deployment pipeline but also an opportunity to make sense of microservices as a fairly recent paradigm in application deployment via manageable services utilizing a cluster of resources. Devops is not merely a selection of magical commands and tools. It requires fair amount of thinking, planning and selection of tools to guide the future direction of application development. In the true sense of tearing down the wall between application development and release engineering books like this title are saviors for people who are planning to make the leap into release engineering with a better outline of options to research further in the maze of knowledge called google and making "intelligent" choices based on advice/opinions from an industry veteran like Victor.

One of the best books on DevOps I have ever come across. I finished this in little less than 3 days. Couldn't take my eyes off it till I finished every chapter in it. Fantastic narration and explanation of complex topics. I loved the service discovery chapter the most.

Enough said! Just get this book if you want to get your fundamentals of DevOps right. Core concepts that make up DevOps need to be understood really well and this helps you do that exactly.

Terrell Ward Bynum is Director of the Research Center on Computing & Society at Southern Connecticut State University. For 25 years, he was editor-in-chief of the scholarly journal Metaphilosophy. Among his many publications, he is co-editor, with James H. Moor, of The Digital Phoenix: How Computers are Changing Philosophy (Blackwell, 1998) and CyberPhilosophy: The Intersection of Philosophy and Computing (Blackwell, 2002).

Simon Rogerson is Director of the Centre for Computing and Social Responsibility and Professor of Computer Ethics at De Montfort University. He is a co-editor of the scholarly journal Information, Communication and Ethics in Society. Among other publications, he is the author of Ethical Aspects of Information Technology: Issues for Senior Executives (1998) and a co-author of Strategic Management Support Systems (1996).

Good collection

I am teaching Professional Practice in Computer Science and, as part of preparing for the course, I read several of the available texts. While I did not find anything compelling for the way I wanted to teach the course, I was impressed by Bynum's edited
collection. It covers a broad spectrum of ethics in the field and I was able to use it to help structure the class and individual lectures.

As with many collections, the papers/chapters vary in clarity and interest but overall this book serves as a good introduction to the foundations of computer and information system ethics (making the argument that the computer does add new, under-appreciated dimensions to classical ethics). The next time I teach the course I will be using an ethics textbook and Bynum's is right near the top when I consider what to adopt.

A highly-indented coastline of barren, tundra fells backed by monumental fjords, towering snow-capped mountains and rocky, windswept islands, makes Norwegian Lapland one of the most scenically rewarding places to travel in the whole of Europe. Quite unlike the densely forested heartlands of Swedish and Finnish Lapland where spruce and pine trees dominate the landscape, these coastal lands at the top of Europe, buffeted by the Arctic winds, are either completely void of trees or slavishly support a few dwarf species that have become specially adapted to the ferocious climate. It’s a place where snow storms and blizzards sweeping in off the Arctic Ocean can persist for days during the long, dark winter, yet equally a land of exquisite beauty in spring and summer when the delicate flowers of the Arctic burst forth, profiting from the relentless 24hr daylight of the Midnight Sun. The unforgiving geography of Norwegian Lapland is at its most awe-inspiring in the west, where the mountain chain reaches dizzying heights of 1700m. Further east, the landscapes become less agitated, slowly falling away, to be replaced with plateaux of grey, weather-beaten rocks which slip effortlessly into the steely waters of the Arctic Ocean.

Not very extensive

I was excited to get this book a couple months before my vacation to Finnish Lapland. However I'm a bit underwhelmed. First I noticed a small mistake: they list the airport code to Kittil� as KTL, but it's actually KTT. That's not a big deal. But then was disappointed to find that they don't even mention the area I'm going to visit. Yll�s is the largest ski area in Finland in terms of number of ski runs/slopes and lifts. There is no mention of it at all is this book. It's in between 2 villages: Yll�sj�rvi and �k�slompolo, both of which have local tour guides offering husky, reindeer and snowmobile safaris. No mention of these towns or tour operators either. They do mention Levi, which has the largest ski village and more amenities than Yll�s. There's probably a lot of good info in this book, but if you're going to Finnish Lapland, I think you'd be better off buying the Lonely Planet Finland guide.

The best guide we could find for visiting Northern Sweden and Norway

Of the three books we bought for our trip to Northern Sweden and Norway in January to see the Aurora Borealis, this was the best. The others were more general and had very little information on this zone.

It's very good, but ...

While I'll never claim to be an expert in lean, I will say that I am passionate about it and read on the topic as much as I can afford to. I practice the concepts at work, and at home (wife permitting).

Hoshin is a complex topic, with tentacles into many things. This author seems to have taken a relatively narrow view of hoshin as primarily an "execution tool." While I agree that it is great at execution (and perhaps a great way to introduce hoshin to an organization), it can serve to help set direction as well as develop team members to perform at higher levels. I was disappointed to see these points omitted.

Pro:
+Brief and generally well written, with only a few minor errors that I could spot
+Excellent X-Matrix variant, better in my opinion than any other I have seen (e.g. easier to see strong linkages of strategy to tactics, some metrics use from/to/by language, etc.)... see con section for more here
+Many, many great points and insights that I will use often
+Perhaps a simpler, narrower application of hoshin that may serve as a good introduction to the concept for an organization (see cons for more)
+Usually can be found at a good price despite being out of print
+Interesting appendix items for problem-solving... unique

Con:
-Designed as a means to execute mainly, skipping innovation and teaching opportunity aspects of PDCA (see introductory comments)
-Weak graphics/illustrations/figures relative to others
-No index of terms in the back for quick reference
-Some repetition, more than I would expect
-Book is prone to getting beat up, very soft cover and pages (think romance novel paper if that helps)
-Not as well-designed as other more modern texts in breaking down hoshin into a process that can be readily tried... back in 1995 this would have been cutting edge and actually a "pro" but in 2009 the literary competition has passed her
-Not enough detail on A3 thinking
-Under leveraged X-Matrix content! Some simple yet surprisingly innovative elements were shown but never discussed, a missed opportunity! (see pro section for more)
-I wish the book had the title on the spine... when on the shelf it just disappears, an unexpected bummer

Bottom line: I think this was probably the definitive book for 1995 and a source of inspiration from which other authors must have built from. I do recommend this book as a complementary offering to other books on this subject, however note that I feel that newer, more complete books on the topic are now available (e.g. Hoshin Kanri for the Lean Enterprise). A good book to own for the lean zealot, so don't let cons drag the book down too much - it's handy.

A concise, practical introduction to Hoshin Planning

If you don't need to know about Hoshin Planning, don't read this book; if you do, you will find it mercifully short. I was able to read it cover-to-cover in one transcontinental flight. Born as a component of TQM, Hoshin Planning has taken on a life of its own and is in use in companies that do not have a TQM program in place or where that program has been abandoned. Wiremold, for example, used it in support of its lean manufacturing implementation in the 1990's, and HP has been using it as part of its normal business planning process.

Hoshin Planning is about strategy deployment and Bechtell's point is that it improves upon the earlier Management By Objectives (MBO) by not only setting quantitative goals but also providing the "catchball process" of discussions up and down the hierarchy and between peer groups on the means by which these goals can be achieved. The result is a more realistic plan, to which organization members are committed. Bechtell also describes how the catchball process is facilitated by the traditional statistical "7 tools of QC" and what has been called in Japan "the new 7 tools of QC" for planning and management, ranging from affinity maps to radar charts. While some of these tools lose their relevance outside of TQM, others don't.

The price the reader pays for the conciseness of this book is that it is short on concrete examples. It also fails to spell out the assumptions that must be true for the method to work. For the work force to participate in Hoshin Planning, it must have from the outset the skills needed to execute the strategy. Otherwise, its members are in no position to make useful inputs to the catchball process. Lean manufacturing implementation, for example, involves the acquisition of new engineering and managerial skills by the work force. At the outset, by definition, it does not possess these skills. Lean manufacturing implementation therefore requires a bootstrapping process in which initial projects inoculate the work force with skills that can then be applied in the planning of further waves of projects. Bechtell does not address this issue, but, to my knowledge, neither do other writers on Hoshin Planning.

You've got to read it.

Dry? Yes, but short and to the point. Author describes a process (series Of) which when followed allows the entire company to respond to the big initiaties needed to change the direction of the company. Relies on teams from the smallest operating groups who will invent the systems they will use. Wonderful process and well worthy of the effort.
