About the Author
Eric van der Vlist is an independent consultant and trainer. His domain of expertise includes Web development and XML technologies. He is the creator and main editor of XMLfr.org, the main site dedicated to XML technologies in French, the author of the O’Reilly books XML Schema and RELAX NG, and a member or the ISO DSDL (http://dsdl.org) working group, which focuses on XML schema languages. He is based in Paris and you can reach him by mail (vdv@dyomedea.com) or meet him at one of the many conferences where he presents his projects.

Alessandro Vernet has been involved with web and XML technologies from day one. Prior to co-founding Orbeon, he worked at Symantec Corporation as part of the VisualCafe team, working on the next-generation RAD for web applications. He is the co-author of The Best of Java, received the 1998 Logitech Award for his master’s thesis on Jaskell, and is one of the architects of the open source Orbeon PresentationServer (OPS) project. His current interests lie in XML technologies and web applications. He recently implemented an XForms engine using Ajax/JavaScript, co-authored the XML Pipeline Language specification published by the W3C, and is active in two W3C Working Groups: the XForms and XML Processing Model Working Groups. He holds an MS/CS from the Swiss Institute of Technology (EPFL) in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Erik Bruchez has extensive experience in the software industry as a software architect and consultant. As a former employee of Symantec Corporation, he contributed to the VisualCafe for Java product line. In 1999, he co-founded Orbeon, Inc. (www.orbeon.com), where he is now an architect of Orbeon PresentationServer (OPS), an open source web platform for form-based applications that builds on technologies such as XForms and Ajax. Erik participates in the W3C’s XForms and XML Processing Model working groups. He is the author of articles about web applications and XML technologies and has been a speaker at conferences such as JavaOne, ObjectWebCon, and XTech. Erik holds an MS/CS degree from the Swiss Institute of Technology (EPFL) in Lausanne, Switzerland. He spends most of his time between Switzerland and California and can be reached by email at ebruchez@orbeon.com.

Joe Fawcett started programming in the seventies and briefly worked in IT after leaving full-time education. He then pursued a more checkered career before returning to software development in 1994. In 2003 he was awarded the title of Microsoft Most Valuable Professional in XML for community contributions and technical expertise. He currently works in London as senior developer for FTC Kaplan Ltd, a leading international provider of accountancy and business training.

Danny Ayers is a freelance developer, technical author, and consultant specializing in cutting-edge Web technologies. His motivation is the belief that with a little encouragement, the Web can be significantly more useful and interesting than it is now. Here we go again, another book from Wrox press written by multiple authors from multiple disciplines. Professional Web 2.0 Programming is another deception for me in that it only provides high level details about web 2.0 and the book contains several chapters of subjects already mentioned over and over again in other books already. Let's start with Chapter 2. Here we have an overview of HTML, CSS, XHTML and DOM. I mean, why is this mentioned here? Is this a WEB 2.0 book or Web 1.0 book? Chapter 3 is about JavaScript and Ajax. What a waste, I already have a JavaScript book no need for half a chapter on JavaScript undefined objects. The other half is about high level design philosophies about Ajax. If this is what is referred to as a professional book on programming I'm really disappointed. Chapter 5 is a rehash of XSL with a mix of SVG. Chapter 6 is a waste of time about rich client applications providing little value to the reader. Chapter 7 is a rehash of the HTTP protocol URI. Chapter 8 is a rehash of XML. Chapter 9 talks about Syndication. Ha! Finally 15 pages worth of WEB 2.0 information via a high level definition of the RSS format. Chapter 11 is about web services, a rehash of other books on the subject.

A little bit of everything leads to nothing

As per the other reviewer, this book uses one chapter for each topic: eg. HTML/CSS, Javascript, Design Principles, and sometimes not even a whole chapter eg, Chapter 5 includes SVG, XSLT, XPATH, XFORMS, and the discussion about HTML 5 and XHTML 2.0.

Each section only really makes sense if you are already familiar with the topic. If you are familiar with the topic, then the relevant section will only bore you. The areas where you are not so familiar will confuse you.

It seems this book is an attempt to explain Web 2.0 technologies in a really short sharp fashion, from the beginning. Unfortunately, each topic is worthy of its own book. Shrinking 10+ books down to one doesn't work very well.

However, I do think an advanced book that assumes knowledge of these technologies and explains how to integrate them together would be cool.

Terrible book

Basically this book will hardly teach you anything you don't already know. They assume prior knowledge about almost every single topic they cover. They say in the preface that this book is not about java-script DOM, XML, AJAX or any specific technology for that matter. This book is more like some overview of all the technoligies that are used in Web 2.0 sites but none of them are explained in a way that someone without prior knowledge would understand. This book may only be useful for you if you are an experienced web developer with thorough knowledge in both backend and frontend technologies and just looking for some better practices and tips.
Unfortunately there aren't so many people that fit that description.

An excellent reference book which should be in any engineers library. Author has put together a well thought out book which is easy to read and which covers a tremendous amount of material. Marketing Automobiles As A Way to Distinguish Them From The Competition.

A must read for any current, future or past Mercedes-Benz owner, as well as Mercedes-Benz dealership employee. This is the story of how the Mercedes-Benz USA, the marketing arm of Mercedes-Benz/Daimler, a German automobile manufacturer, has transformed itself to be customer driven and focused as a company. In today’s high-line automotive world there are a lot of great products and manufacturers to choose from, engineering, technology, styling are all factors, but in the end the real deal-closer is customer service.

This book talks about MBUSA’s CEO, Steve Cannon, the American who has headed up the US Marketing arm of the company since 2007, and took over as President and CEO of MBUSA in 2011, and his program of implementation of moving the company from a seller of automobiles, to the next level, a supplier to satisfied customers. Mercedes-Benz feels that providing exceptional and personal service is a hallmark of any leading brand, and with the “Best or Nothing” mantra follows through with that.

The book at first seems to be more an homage to Cannon, as it mentions him in glowing terms, time and time again throughout the first half of the book. As you look into the author’s past work, you see similar Management and Marketing books about other companies that he has written, as well as he mentions them quite often in this book. And you get the feeling that this might be the result of being hired by the companies to produce these tomes. Stepping over the self-promotion and the flattery of MBUSA’s CEO Cannon, there are some very interesting case-studies as well as approaches to customer management that the company has developed and some which were discontinued, all laid out in the timeline of the study, as the book progresses.

A program that developed, The Concierge Program, where other companies use the Genius title, MBUSA chooses to use the customer and service oriented title of Concierge, which is thought of more as a hospitality service position, than a technical trainer position. Saying that we are here to help the customer, as opposed to telling the customer the company employee is more knowledgeable than you are. Another program, of planning ahead for problematic issues with new models in their “MB Select” Program that came into existence as both the CLA and S-Class models debuted, knowing that there would indeed be issues that needed to be addressed as brand new models came to market, and giving the first responders, the dealership staff, that authority and responsibility to fix the problem and make the customer happy, without the hassle of layers of corporate approval.
While the book is more like a first-year marketing student’s required reading, it is an easy read of 263 pages. The stories of success and a few failures goes by quickly with lead up, and responses. While the book does come across as an ego building exercise, it has a number of very interesting examples of programs that have worked and those that were tried and abandoned. The book makes provides a view of how MBUSA has worked hard to become the top seller of luxury automobiles in the USA.

About the Author

Murray A. Straus is the founder and co-director of the Family Research Laboratory, and professor of sociology at the University of New Hampshire. He has been president of the National Council on Family Relations and two other scientific societies. He is the author or co-author of numerous books, including Beating The Devil Out Of Them: Corporal Punishment in American Children; Understanding Partner Violence: Prevalence, Causes, Consequences, and Solutions; and Stress, Culture, and Aggression. In addition he has written over two hundred articles on the sociology of the family, South Asia, and rural sociology.

Richard J. Gelles is dean of the School of Social Work at the University of Pennsylvania, where he holds the Joanne T. and Raymond H. Welsh Chair of Child Welfare and Family Violence. He is the author of The Violent Home: A Study of Physical Aggression Between Husbands and Wives, Family Violence, and Behind Closed Doors: Violence in the American Family.
