This is the second edition of a book that explains the basic science and clinical applications of fundus autofluorescence in ophthalmology. The first edition was published in 2009. The purpose is to explain fundus autofluorescence, a worthy objective as it is an important aspect of multimodal imaging used in diagnosis and treatment of retinal disease. The audience is ophthalmologists and those interested in learning about imaging in ophthalmology. The authors are experts in the field. The book covers the basic science and theory behind autofluorescence and its clinical applications in retinal disease states. Excellent figures and illustrations depict multimodal imaging in retinal disease. Each chapter is well organized, up to date, and well researched. The second edition has chapters on more diseases and an interactive searchable online format for use on digital platforms. This is an excellent reference for ophthalmologists, retinal specialists, or those with an interest in retinal disease or ocular imaging. It is concise, well written, and full of excellent images and example cases. The second edition is a major upgrade.

A classic worth a second look and an update

Although first published in 1994, a long time ago in the rapidly developing science of evolutionary psychology, Robert Wright's seminal book remains an excellent introduction to the subject. The text crackles with an incisive wit that says, yes we're animals, but we can live with that. The discussion is thorough, ranging from a rather intense focus on Charles Darwin and his life through the sexist and morality debate occasioned by the publication of Edward O. Wilson's Sociobiology in 1975, to the rise of the use of primate comparisons fueled by Jane Goodall's instant classic, The Chimpanzees of Gombe: Patterns of Behavior (1986). Wright has some rather serious fun with human sexual behavior as seen from the perspective of evolutionary psychology, but he spends even more time worrying (to no good effect, in my opinion) about altruism and the shaky concept of kin selection. The title is partly ironic, since much of the material suggests that we are something less than "moral." The "Everyday Life" in the title is an allusion to Freud (The Psychopathology of Everyday Life, 1904) who makes a dual appearance in the text, first as a kind of not-yet-illuminated precursor to modern Darwinian thought, and second as the reigning champ of psychology that evolutionary psychology is out to dethrone. (See especially page 314.)

What's exciting about evolutionary psychology is that for the first time psychology has a firm scientific foundation upon which to build. But it's a tough subject for some people, I think, mainly because they confuse "is" with "ought." The discoveries of evolutionary psychology about the differing reproductive strategies of the sexes offend some people in the same way that Darwin's insight about our kinship with (other) animals offended the Victorians. Evolutionary psychology shows us that men lie, cheat and hustle relentlessly for sex, while women manipulate available males into caring for their offspring, and if possible for children fathered by other males. Insights like these are seen by some as immoral imperatives, when in fact they are amoral statements of factual observation. What "is" isn't necessarily the same thing as what ought to be. And really, we shouldn't blame the messenger.

Where Wright's book especially shows its age is in trying to explain altruism. He wasn't aware of the handicap principle developed by Amotz and Avishag in their exciting book, The Handicap Principle: A Missing Piece of Darwin's Puzzle (1997) which nicely explains "altruism" (it's an advertisement of fitness) and a number of other evolutionary conundrums, including Wright's question on page 390, "Why do soldiers die for their country?" Additionally on pages 68-70, where Wright attempts to account for female cuckoldry, he gives three reasons, but seems uncertain of the most important one, which is that a woman, once established in a secure pair-bond will sometimes seek to upgrade the genetic input by having a clandestine fling with what she sees as an alpha male. Also Wright's attempt to account for homosexuality (pages 384-386) stumbles over itself in trying to be politically correct while missing the major point that homosexuality facilitates male bonding and therefore is certainly adaptive since male coalitions increase each member of the coalition's chance of securing females. It fact, Wright misses the whole concept of male bonding. There's not even an index entry for it.

These observations are not to be taken as criticisms of the book since Wright was writing before knowledge of some of these ideas became widespread. The Moral Animal remains an outstanding opus and one that has helped introduce a large readership to the power and efficacy of evolutionary psychology, a scientific approach to psychology that will, I believe, replace the old paradigms currently holding sway in our universities. Of course this will only happen when the old behaviorists, and cognitive and psychoanalytic stalwarts...retire.

I would like to see Wright revise this book in light of the many discoveries made during the nineties and reissue it. His readable and engaging style would make the update fun to read.

One of the best introductions to Evolutionary Psychology

Though a few other books related to Evolutionary Psychology have been written since this, it is still one of the best introductions to the field. It is intelligently written, but not pendantic. Wright discusses many aspects of evolutionary psych. using many examples from the life of Charles Darwin.
Many have criticized this work as a justifying gender inequality, usually as related to male oppression and abuse of females. Wright openly states that he is attempting to explain human behavior from a Darwinian perspective. He argues that this perspective sheds much light on the subject, though he admits is isn't perfect or all inclusive. Wright closes with several behaviors that Evolutionary Psychology can not adequetly explain (most glaringly, homosexuality).
Though many women have been outraged by this work, this book has much to offer for both females and males who read it from a non-ideological perspective. I've read several interviews with Wright and other Evolutionary Psychologists who have stated that by understanding why we (all people) are naturally inclined to behave in certain ways are we better able to control behavioral tendencies that may be detrimental to ourselves and others. When read from this perspective, this book can only help men and women better undertand each other and improve relations between the sexes.

Captivating!

I read the celebrated "Moral Animal" some 10 years ago, then re-read and underlined it at least twice. Finally I had found a theory of human nature and psychology I could wholeheartedly believe in. I was looking for a great quote from that book last week but found I had loaned out both copies - so I bought a new one and ended up re-reading the whole thing.

The quote is: "...humans are a species splendid in their array of moral equipment, tragic in their propensity to misuse it, and pathetic in their constitutional ignorance of the misuse."

Science journalist Robert Wright compiled these findings of evolutionary psychology (EP) for the lay reader in 1994 and "Moral Animal" is still a timely treatise. Matt Ridley introduced his excellent "Red Queen" about the same topic around the same year. Wright writes in an engaging manner, intertwining his pearls with biographical sketches of Charles Darwin. Disclaimer: For those who are offended by the very suggestion that our behavior evolved from apes - and that our behavior is an elaborate, sophisticated manifestation of language and socialization which evolved by natural selection along with a huge brain - you won't like this book.

I realize the following assessment of mine is anecdotal, but here goes: I have seen step-children treated differently than genetic children. I have seen how men and women preen, peacock-like, showing off their best (?) sides during courtships and how they pair off in society according to commonly accepted determinants of status, differing depending on sex. I have read about and subsequently observed how people (unconsciously?) score each other during their social interactions, rating relationship values for the future. I have observed how cheating (generic sense) is more rampant in very large groups where peer-pressure ceases to be such an important deterrent. Finally, game theory concepts utilized in EP are widely adapted and used in self-help books. I could go on with other examples, but, in short, I'm a sucker for EP.

Subsequently, I have read about resistance in university humanities departments to EP - humans being so special and all. We are - in the sense that our intelligence has given us free reign over our world - but humans are still very imperfect. We are poorly designed in many ways (backs, knees, tendency to war, self-delusion) - exactly what one would expect from evolution. Cockroaches or certain scorpions, which can live without food and water for almost a year, are also impressive. There is every reason to believe that our (at times) poor behavior evolved in just as Rube-Goldberg a fashion as did our very complicated and redundant blood clotting mechanism.

Anyway, this book is superb. I will close since I could end up nattering on for more pages than most would want to read. Consider moving "Moral Animal" to closer to the top of your TBR list. A Best Buy.

About the Author
Ray Fisman is the Slater Chair in Behavioral Economics at Boston University. Previously, he was Lambert Family Professor of Social Enterprise and co-director of the Social Enterprise Program at the Columbia Business School. He is the author of The Org, with Tim Sullivan, and Economic Gangsters, with Ted Miguel.

Every one of us are likely to be engaged in markets most days of our lives. Choosing your child's best school? Finding a dance partner? Bidding on Ebay? Buying at a market? The Inner Lives of Markets gives us the insights and understanding of how these markets work, and outlines some of the breakthrough solutions over the last 50 years. A Wonderful Book for All Non-Economists, and for Many Economists as Well

I read this book in one of my Kindles during a transatlantic flight, unable to put it down, and it is now full of notes and highlights. It is an outstanding book. I was highly engaged with the deeply human historical account of how economic theory and practice has been developing, with its massive impact on markets and also on us.

While I’m not an economist (MSc in Industrial Engineer and MBA), I did study some economics, and within my long reading lists I always include some books on economics (particularly behavioral economics), and many of the non-fiction bestsellers I read do touch on economics very frequently. Against this backdrop, there were a few things that I particularly loved about this book:

First, the historical accounts are superb, both regarding their unexpected originality (starting with the fascinating tale on the economic organization of POW camps) and beautiful narrative.
Second, I did learn a lot about topics which are so close to our daily lives and so prevalent in today’s markets, but about which I realized I was quite clueless. This includes the brilliant description of the evolution of auctions, and the economics of platforms which represent so much (and each day much more) of our personal transactions.
Finally, as someone who has seen it all across the 42 countries I frequently visit, I truly loved the authors' so balanced view between the extremists for and against absolutely free markets. This is an extremely relevant issue these days in the whole world, from developed to emerging markets, and I wish everyone were exposed to their so sensible perspective.

Great human insight into what drives markets

I'm generally averse to business books, but Tim Sullivan and Ray Fisman brought me into the very human drivers of how markets form and invariably shape us with a combination of ingenious stories, great writing and a winning tone. If you've ever felt emotional agreement with Yuval Harari's concept of "imagined realities" about concepts like LLCs, religions, and yes, markets, you'll love this book. It's a wonderful generalist read in the same way that "Cod: A Biography of the Fish that Changed the World" is. You never thought you'd be interested, then you keep picking it up until you're done. Certainly it compelled my interest a lot more than Shiller's Animal Spirits did. Recommended.

My new best friend in my purse

I finished reading the book, the vicious cycle, and it REALLY helped me get my diet started. I am not a cook and this new way of planning had me sooo confused. I lived on slices of cheese, eggs, bell peppers and almond butter in Tupperware. This I could handle. Now I carry my book in my purse, so I am never without it. I use the "legal list of foods" for everything I buy. Just yesterday, I was buying garlic and was trying to choose paste, fresh, or whole. I checked the ingredients in paste and found citric acid and soyoil. I checked my book and no soy products allowed. Saves me a lot of stress. Buy the paperback as it is small and light and easy to carry all the time. As far as the actual reading of the book material. I understood a lot of it and that was helpful. Some of it was just way over my head. I think it is ok to skim over the whys of molecules, etc.I could not find this on ebook for the ipad, only the kindle. Kind of glad though as it is easier to grab the book than bring it all up for an ebook.

Great cookbook.

Fabulous!!! Makes it easy and delicious, and broadens our menu. Makes the SCD protocol more fun and "normal" too. Nice large print, with some encouraging photos too. The SCD diet has made a gigantic difference in our son's gut health and brain fog.

Very rarely do I find many recipes in one book that I really use. This one was an exception. I have made so many of the recipes and they are so easy to make. Highly recommended book.

About the Author

Mohammed Ben Sulayem is one of the most famous and successful sportsmen in the Middle East. The UAE national was a winner of a record 14 Middle East Rally Championships and competed with success at World Championship level. He is also a Vice President of the Federation Automobile International (FIA) the global governing body for motorsport including Formula 1. He has an intimate knowledge of sport management within the Middle East (and indeed globally), combining is scholarly contacts combined with practical engagement in the field.

Sean O'Connor has an established research publication record in the field of sports management. He has lectured at a number of universities in the Republic of Ireland, including University College Dublin, and Dublin Institute of Technology. A Doctoral candidate at University of Ulster he has over twenty five years professional experience in the marketing and communication of sport in particular in the Middle East region. He holds an MPhil from DIT and a MA in Political Communications from DCU. He is also a Director of the Automobile and Touring Club of the UAE reporting to its President Mr. Ben Sulayem. He was a member of the organizing committee of the inaugural Abu Dhabi Formula 1 Grand Prix that won the award for the best Grand Prix in the 2009 world championship.

David Hassan is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Ulster, Jordanstown. He is the Academic Editor of Sport in Society, an international, peer-reviewed journal (Routledge) and Series Editor of Foundations in Sport Management (with Dr Allan Edwards), a new Routledge book series beginning in 2010. He is a holder of a Distinguished Research Fellowship from Ulster in recognition of his outstanding contribution to research and in 2008 was appointed as an International Scholar with the International Football Institute in England. He is the editor of seven academic books on sport studies, has published over 50 scholarly articles in peer reviewed journals/edited books and has presented at international conferences around the world.

Not for the weak-willed or overly sentimental, BUT...

neither are big dogs. It's important to remember that this particular book is aimed at training large aggressive breeds. Yes, you can get your poodle to sit and stay and fetch using other methods. But this is a method for making sure your hundred pound Rottweiler obeys you when failure can mean tragedy. I've trained every one of my dogs using this book's methods. I've had German Sheperds, Rottweilers, Pit Bulls and Filas. Every one of them has responded perfectly to the training. I'm not a breeder or a professional trainer, but my dogs' obedience has been equal to or better than any of the trained dogs that I've encountered. Some of the methods aren't pleasant; training soldiers for combat isn't usually a pleasant process, either. But the point of effective training isn't the trainer's assuaging his or her Inner Child; it's about developing RELIABLE control over a potentially lethal animal. The huggy-wuggy here's-a-puppy treat methods don't work when the animal is under strong external stimulation. Not a week goes by that I don't see the failure of the "kindhearted" methods, just in the course of walking my dog in the local parks.

The main thing with the Koehler method is to follow it exactly!

Some of the detractors here have deliberately lied about the contents of the book. For example, he doesn't advocate beating a dog"for 30 minutes". He advocates hitting the dog sharply on the muzzle if it turns on the trainer. Anyone who thinks that you can correct that kind of misplaced aggression with hugs, treats and "bad-doggies" should reconsider owning a large breed.

It's important to note that Koehler devotes a good bit of time early in the book on selecting dogs with suitable temperament.

In short, I recommend this book without reservation to those with ANY breed of dog who are willing to trade a bit of unpleasantness for a well adjusted dog with rock solid obedience.

This book could save your dog's life

This is a very easy to follow, effective book for training dogs. This is NOT a book for owners with dog problems (or dogs with owner problems). If you just want to train your dog by using proven, conditioning techniques, then this is the book for you.

In a nutshell, this book teaches you how to ensure that your dog is paying attention to you at all times, and either obeys your commands, or suffers the consequences of his actions. This is NOT punishment. The dog decides. The dog learns. The dog obeys because he decides to obey. This not only gives him self-confidence, but also gives him a feeling of security because he knows he is doing the right thing. Dogs crave this. They WANT to please you.

Basically, you start with a long leash and a choke collar. You start walking in one direction. Of course, your dog will bound off ahead of you. At that point, you reverse direction, and walk the other way. The dog learns pretty quickly that he better keep an eye on you if he wants to keep from getting jerked around.

It goes on from there, and the lead gets shorter and shorter. The dog learns to HEAL, SIT, STAY etc., but basically you are conditioning the dog to think he is on lead all the time, and has NO choice but to obey or come when called, and, he is always paying attention to you. This is KEY!

If your Jack Russell sees a rabbit running across the road in front of an oncoming car, do you think he will come if you have a treat in your hand? Is he going to look both ways before crossing? No way. But if he has been conditioned to think that if he doesn't come, you'll just jerk his chain, he won't hesitate. He'll stop in his tracks, turn, run back to you, run right around behind you, and sit down right beside you... No kidding.[Keep in mind that to get to this point takes months and months of training for at least 30 minutes a day. This is not a miracle training book]

I have used it and it works, plain and simple. Also, you can stop at any time, and still gain some control of your dog on lead.

There is no punishment involved as part of the training of the dog! The dog gets to decide what he wants to do.

I trained my first dog this way, and it worked perfectly. I never hit, drowned, beat, etc., because that's not part of the training!

All the negative comments on this book have to do with either the last chapter or just plain ignorance. The last chapter deals with a subject the author probably should have left out, that is, dealing with problem dogs that are on their last chance before being put to death. Don't bother reading it. If you have a dog that bad, you've got a problem you can't solve on Amazon.com!

Others try to equate a dog's mentally with that of a human. Dogs do not perceive, process, or analyze information the way humans do. Comparing how you would feel if you were treated the way a dog is treated is incorrect.

I just got a new dog, and I want it to be happy and love life. The Koehler method helps set expectations the dog understands and can achieve, which in-turn keeps him happy and safe at the same time.

I'm a professional dog trainer, training dogs mostly for obedience and occasionally for protection work. I found Mr. Koehler's dog book a rare book of so many straight-forward, no nonsense very effective methods of dog training. His throw-chain method is, I think the signature part of his obedience training. He is one of the best I guess. I rate his book 5 star. If you want a fast,effective, and long lasting dog training, try his book. You'll be thankful you did.

For this reason, readers who are not familiar with basic reliability modelling and evaluation should either first read the companion volume or, at least, read the two volumes side by side. Those who are already familiar with the basic concepts and only require an extension of their knowledge into the power system problem area should be able to understand the present text with little or no reference to the earlier work. In order to assist readers, the present book refers frequently to the first volume at relevant points, citing it simply as Engineering Systems. Reliability Evaluation of Power Systems has evolved from our deep interest in education and our long-standing involvement in quantitative reliability evaluation and application of probability techniques to power system problems. It could not have been written, however, without the active involvement of many students in our respective research programs. There have been too many to mention individu� ally hut most are recorded within the references at the ends of chapters.

Make sure to get part 1

This is a great book, but make sure that if you purchase it that you also get Reliability Evaluation of Engineering Systems: Concepts and Techniques by the same authors. This is really the second of a 2 part series, and refers back to Engineering Systems for all of the math, providing specific examples for the power system in this book.

I'm working on a project investigating reliability of various networks within the electric power system, and the two books by Billinton and Allan are the best I've seen on the subject.
