About the Author
Since 1973, Rick has spent about four months a year exploring Europe. His mission: to empower Americans to have European trips that are fun, affordable, and culturally broadening. Rick produces a best-selling guidebook series, a public television series, and a public radio show, and organizes small-group tours that take over 20,000 travelers to Europe annually. He does all of this with the help of a hardworking, well-traveled staff of 100 at Rick Steves' Europe in Edmonds, Washington, near Seattle. When not on the road, Rick is active in his church and with advocacy groups focused on economic justice, drug policy reform, and ending hunger. To recharge, Rick plays piano, relaxes at his family cabin in the Cascade Mountains, and spends time with his partner Trish, son Andy, and daughter Jackie.

Buy the paperback and not the Kindle version!!!

I have always bought the paperback before (2007, 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016) but decided to buy the Kindle version for 2017 to make things easier. (The book changes little, but some hotels want to see you have the latest version to get the RS discount.) I will never do that again. AVOID this edition, and spend an extra buck for the paperback. Finding things in this edition is cumbersome, and some things in the print version are not in the Kindle version. (What the heck happened to Ravenna for goodness sakes!)

Don't travel without Rick

Gotta love Rick Steve's book for travel. His books have taken me all over the world. I am so grateful for his insight as I enjoy traveling and his advice is very beneficial. I have previously purchased his Italy book but I am in Florida for the winter and I need his sound advise for a spring trip. I have a copy of "Little Ricky" too which is a great book on the Italian language. Mostly conversation but great translations. Any of his books help you travel through the world with expert advise and helpful hints on lodging, great eating and general knowledge for making the trip memorable. I don't travel without my Rick Steve travel books.

Incredible Italy Guide!

Rick Steves is a wonderful travel writer, and his travel books are the only ones I read. Compared to other popular travel books which are dry and dull, Rick's books are like chatting with an old friend who has just returned from a fascinating journey.
I used Rick's guide to Italy on a recent trip, and it was fantastic! It is the perfect blend of general information and specific facts, such as extremely useful information on the best bus routes in Rome. This type of advice allows you to travel like a local, rather than a tourist.
I also love Rick's personal touches on his self-guided walking tours. My favorites are his Renaissance walking tour through Florence, and the self-guided cruise along the Grand Canal in Venice. Another chance to travel like a local.
One thing I've noticed with these guidebooks is that the overall text does not change from year to year. Of course, current details such as prices and phone numbers are updated yearly, but that type of information could be obsolete by the time the book is published. So you may as well save money and buy an older edition.
