True Grit

The Sands of Valour, published in 1967, reminds me of Norman Mailer's The Naked and the Dead, another novel which explores a small group of
men and their performance under the extremities of war. While I've not read the Mailer novel in nearly forty years it seems to me that Wagner's work is more psychologically dense and particularly honest about the inevitable weaknesses that men would exhibit under the strains of combat, in
this case tank warfare of the North Africa campaign of late 1941. Remarkable that the book has never been reviewed here, perhaps there's something over at amazon.uk, as Wagner's tale is obviously the fictionalization of his time there with the British forces. Lots of stiff upper lip
and 'briticisms' which made for interesting reading - The Sands of Valour is a page turner and not only because of the excitement and tension of reading about men trying to kill each other; it is well written and filled with carefully rendered detail peculiar to that mechanized form of desert warfare.
