FATHER DAVE PIVONKA, T.O.R., is the director of seminary formation for the Franciscan Friars of the Third Order Regular. He has been a priest for ten years and absolutely loves his calling. Father Dave preaches at conferences around the United States and leads pilgrimages around the world. He wrote Spiritual Freedom: God’s Life-Changing Gift.

More than just a 500 mile walk...

People of all faith backgrounds or even those with none at all will appreciate Fr. Dave's description of his 500 mile hike to the church Santiago De Compestela in Spain. There is a refreshing honesty throughout as the author considers, decides and ultimately takes the journey through the Spanish countryside with people from all over the world. Walking up to 23 miles a day, but usually less, the story moves along from stop to stop as Fr. Dave, his fellow priest, and the others along the trail share meals, lodging, and a small slice of their lives with each other.

The author describes the humble accomodations, the simple meals and the surprising fellowship among those on the journey. There is also Fr. Dave's reflections on his life as a priest in the Catholic Church, along with his doubts and struggles in his vocation. The book details both a physical as well as a spiritual journey. Those interested in reading about the physical journey will be surprisingly move by teh spiritual reflections while those interested in the spiritual side will likewise be entertained by the details of the journey itself. It's not a day-by-day diary so it's a fairly quick read and an enjoyable one.

Walking the Camino de Santiago [the way of St. James]

I have been reading and collecting books on the subject of the pilgrimage to the shrine of St. James in Santiago de Campostela, Galicia, Spain for a number of years.
I first went to Spain 36 years ago and have been back once. I hope to go again and walk at least part of the pilgrims' way across the north of Spain. It is what was called "the great pilgrimage of the Middle Ages."

This book, written by a priest who is a professor of theology is a wonderful example of the universality of human experience and the very special experiences of the individuals who walk the Way.

This book is an excellent book for those new to cytology. It is thoroughly informative on normal cellular morphology, and includes criteria for various disease states. It was designed for cytotechnologist training; it is not designed to be more than that. It also includes useful laboratory management information. Barker's analysis moves dialectically backwards and forwards between these two moments in order to illuminate aspects of early modern culture, and to critique the ways in which the complicity between culture and violence has been occluded. Rejecting the tendency of both modernism and post-modernism to homogenise historical time, Barker argues for a genuinely new, 'diacritical' understanding of the violence of history.

Creating Culture: A good value

For students of organizational culture, this text is highly recommended. I had a hardbound copy from 20 years ago that got damaged, so initially I ordered this to replace the old book. It is a good book on how to "create" and organizational culture in a high-tech company and creates a lot of good discussion points as the ideas are certainly controversial.

Recommended in better understanding culture and how it can control companies and the lives of many people who work in them. This book gets into the details of the culture of an engineering company which ultimately drove many of the employees to put their work first, before anything else in their lives. It's a great book for leaders of small and large teams.

An Amazing Achievement !

I have been using Supercollider since the first release in 1996. Since then it has become 'open source' and has (as it's creator James McCartney says in the introduction) taken on a life of it's own. Multitudes of creative minds in the field of computer music have added to the code and have made it such a rich and wonderful programming environment to work in. I am primarily a composer of acoustic chamber works, but what I have always liked about Supercollider is it efficiency. It has always seemed less cumbersome to me than CSound, and right out of the gate you are creating complex and interesting sounds with a minimal amount of code. In the spirit of Supercollider itself, the book is not written by one person but is authored by the top Supercollider gurus and practitioners from around the world. It starts with a straightforward tutorial by David Cottle and progresses quickly to more complex and specific subjects like granular synthesis and machine listening. But you will find, even from the preliminary code, that you are creating amazing, timbrally rich sounds. This book is a great achievement!!! We have waited a long time for this! Anyone who is interested in Supercollider and computer music needs this book!!

Excellent resource, not quite perfect.

This book is a treasure trove for anyone interested in SC. The writing style throughout is accessible and enthusiastic, and the quality of information is truly impressive. Of course, any book like this one suffers from the rapid pace of software development, so some information is already outdated. However, as far as I can tell all the examples are useful as-is (barring system-specific dependencies). The book is not organized as a progressive series of tutorials, so the newcomer may seem a bit bewildered by the array of SC's possibilities and how best to go about learning them. I suggest the complete beginner read Cottle chapter to get started, then just jump into the other chapters as they become of interest.

I've used SC with Linux on & off over the past years. The SC Book has been a great inspiration for me to get back into this wonderful language - I'm primarily a Csound-based composer, but I'm always on the look-out for interesting developments in similar languages and systems. Btw, the only reason I didn't give it five stars is the absence of an accompanying disc, but in truth it isn't necessary, the book will guide you to all necessary resources. So okay, I'm really giving it four and a half stars. :)

This is the bible. It goes over supercollider inside and out. The beginning is quite rocky as they seem to start giving you examples which aren't well explained. Be prepared for some hair pulling. Regardless, this book along with some supplemental tutorials in the internet will get you going.
