About the Author
Judy Herr, Ph.D., is Professor Emeritus of Early Childhood Education at the University of Wisconsin-Stout. Dr. Herr is a member of numerous early childhood organizations such as NAEYC, and has held leadership positions in these organizations. She is also a frequent lecturer at early childhood conferences and seminars and has published many articles and books on early childhood topics.

Terri Jo Swim, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor and Program Director of Early Childhood Education at Indiana University-Purdue University in Fort Wayne (IPFW). She has been in the field of early childhood education for over 15 years. She has worked in private child care centers, university-based laboratory infant/toddler and preschool programs, and summer camps with children ages birth to 13 years. Terri is also the co-author of CREATIVE RESOURCES FOR INFANTS AND TODDLERS, 2nd Edition (Cengage Learning), with Dr. Judy Herr. Current research interests include infant-toddler and preschool curriculum, Reggio Emilia, documentation, and teacher education.

Easy format

This book contains loads of info in an easy to read, follow and understand format. I took a class at the local community college on electric motors and controls and bought this book because the book we used was wothless. THIS book however is most excellent.
This book contains:
-Troubleshooting Scenarios-helps you develop a systematic approach on troubleshooting.
-Review Questions- follow each section, helping you to maintain what you have just learned.
-Discussion topics and critical thinking
-Chapter objectives-show you what the chapter will cover, what you can expect to learn.
-Loads of diagrams and photos
Covers a broad range of motor types and control systems.
Too much info to cover here.

This book along with its workbook are really incredible.

I am using this book to teach motors and controls in an industrial setting, and I have to say I find it to be superior to the standard text I was taught with, which is "Electrical Motors and Controls" by Rockis and Mazur. In my opinion the Rochis and Mazur text is verbose, and has grown too large over time; it is now almost 700 pages. This means the students can't read it as thoroughly as the Petruzella book which is just under 300 pages and it is so well written that the main points can be covered clearly, instead of being masked by material which can't be adequately covered in a semester long course. I also appreciate the software (CMH Constructor) that is used in the green activities book (not included with just the red book). I think that the two of these books together are really effective and in my opinion the best outcomes require both books. The questions and circuits covered in the green workbook along with the understanding and visualization that the Constructor software brings are hard to beat. I really appreciate the audio that runs in the background when playing with a circuit in the software, this really helps to involve those auditory learners out there. . .I.E. the sound of the overload tripping and the motor stopping reinforces the visual cues in the circuit being displayed.

Due to the quality of these materials I think it will start to become the standard text over time.

This is a fantastic book. I did not learn anything about motors or motor controls as an undergrad EE major and this book taught me an incredible amount. I use it as a reference when there's something on a wiring diagram that I haven't seen before. Highly recommended.

Rodney A. Brooks received a Ph.D. in physics from Harvard University where he learned Quantum Field Theory from its prime developer, Julian Schwinger. During a 25 year career at the National Institutes of Health he published 124 refereed articles. Among his accomplishments was the design and construction of the highest resolution PET scanner at the time. As an amateur clarinetist he founded and led a klezmer band called Shir Delite. After retiring in 1999 he moved to New Zealand where he founded "Kiwis for Balanced Reporting on the Middle East."

A nice elementary overview of field theories (gravitational, EM, nuclear, QM, ...). Kindle price is good.

First off, in common with every other book on QM, this book does not explain or resolve the paradoxes or mathematical inconsistencies of quantum theory. It does present a less common visual interpretation of the theory, following Schwinger's QFT, which is valid, and interesting. Also has a lot of interesting and entertaining footnotes.

I would summarize the author's case as : "Field equations are the most intuitive and mathematically sound way of understanding physics." Most of the book is not about QFT, but about building this case. Mr. Brooks does this in an elementary and entertaining fashion. The author understands the subject, and does a good job of presenting his preferred way of viewing physics, which is: "fields are everything." The author was a student of the brilliant Julian Schwinger, who was the principle architect of QFT, and whom the author feels (perhaps rightly) has been overshadowed by more flamboyant (Feynman) or less mathematically rigorous (Feynman) physicists.
As far as popular expositions of quantum fields, I would compare this book to Feynman's "QED: The Strange Theory of Light and Matter", which gives a nice intuitive description of the path integral approach to quantum fields, at about the same level.
Both approaches are used by working physicists, as appropriate. Both approaches are mathematical tools for making predictions; neither is a key to understanding the nature of reality. Also note there are other formulations, or tools, in use.
As far as 'paradoxes' and 'understanding quantum phenomena', in my opinion, the two above approaches are really about different mental models, and where to put the magic.

Brooks/Schwinger - imagine a wave-function extending over space. Now the odds for an event occurring at a particular point can be calculated, but the event *happens* when the function magically and instantaneously collapses to that point, and disappears.

Feynman - imagine a particle function which magically knows every possible path it could have traveled over a particular interval. The odds of the particle interacting or existing at a particular point are given by this function.

Now, the mathematics in the two approaches is different, but equivalent, so what changes is the mental image that helps to facilitate the calculations. And it is always worthwhile to look at problems from different viewpoints.

This Is Physics For Everyone

This is a fantastic compilation of modern scientific history. I enjoyed the stories and the quotes from the scientists and the laymen (such as myself) trying to understand their work and theories. I love all science, especially the chemistry, geology and physics of the universe, but I must admit I was never big on relativity, QM or QFT. I just couldn't understand all the abstracts as I viewed them. I had to read this book in bits and pieces to grasp what Dr. Brooks was trying to convey. His writing style, the many enjoyable comparisons and the humor, mixed with the stories about the scientists kept me coming back. I now am ready to read this book again in a more constant manor. I never re-read a book, but I'm looking forward to this one. Thank you Mr. Brooks for writing this new understandable text on field theory physics for dummies like me.

As an early reader and admirer of this book, I was glad to see that the Kindle problems mentioned by John Meyer have been repaired. I continue to recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand modern physics. I know of no other book that presents the basics of physics, with numerous historical asides, as well as the concepts of quantum field theory (QFT) for a lay audience. Also, the text shows how QFT resolves the paradoxes and difficulties the usual approaches are forced into because of their initial conditions. As co-author of a physics textbook myself, I also urge physics students to read this book. They will be surprised and delighted at some of the revelations, such as the simple derivation and explanation of E = mc2.

Interesting and informative

If one is familiar with the physics of sound, with its accompanying use of sophisticated mathematics, such as Fourier series, partial differential equations, and so on, it is not surprising to learn that some mathematicians have tried to give music theory a mathematical foundation. If one studies the historical record one will find that their efforts go back for centuries, and musicians have used their results to varying degrees of success. Philosophers of aesthetics have also attempted to find formal or mathematical theories of art, and in a few cases have completely embarrassed themselves in doing this, primarily because of their misunderstanding of the mathematics. Mathematics can be a powerful tool, and it continues its domination in science, technology, business, and industry, but it must be used where it is relevant, and not distorted to make it fit a particular scenario. This is not to say that a successful theory of mathematical aesthetics could not be developed. Indeed, it is belief of this reviewer that such a theory could be developed and would encompass music, art, and dance, and would add much to the appreciation of all these areas.

In general this short book gives a good overview of what is and has been done in the systematization and composition of music using mathematics. The author has given enough to wet the reader's appetite for more in-depth coverage by perusing the many references at the end of the book. The mathematics is kept at a very elementary level, making the book more accessible to a general readership (elementary group theory plays a central role). Therefore readers with a more sophisticated mathematical background may be disappointed. Musicians, both amateur and professional, would definitely gain an appreciation of just how mathematics can encapsulate musical compositions, and how indeed these compositions can be created using various mathematical constructions. The accompanying CD is of course helpful since it music must be heard in order to be fully appreciated. The book could also be of assistance to those who are interested in fully automated musical composition such as now being done in some research programs in artificial intelligence (some of this research is discussed briefly in the book). Of course, a machine that was able to use the same reasoning patterns to do mathematics as to compose music would signal a major advance in machine intelligence.

Although the book is not one on music theory, the author realizes the importance of understanding the elementary physics behind musical sounds, as well as the various tonal systems, such as the Pythagorean `circle of fifths'. He discusses these concepts early in the book, making it more self-contained. This is followed by a somewhat detailed overview of how to use group theory to create musical compositions. Towards the end of the book one finds an interesting application of L-systems to musical compositions. The book ends with the author's views on how various approaches to mathematical music have failed or have been too ad hoc to be useful.

Little insight into why music satisfies or communicates

This well-written book summarizes topics in music theory that correspond to the mathematics and statistics used in engineering and finance.
What it does NOT do, disappointingly, is give much insight into why music communicates and captures emotions. For that, I believe, one must consider music to be a form of language -- different in different cultures, and heard through a filter of our cultural expectations. We enjoy music when it 'plays with' those expectations -- for example, setting up a simple rhythm and then syncopating, or repeating a melody with a twist at the end. The first book I've found that takes on these deeper issues is Aniruddh D Patel, _Music, Language, and the Brain_ (Oxford, 2008), which is far more technical. To be fair to Harkleroad, there are more unanswered questions than simple answers in this field. And Harkleroad does explain well why it's unsatisfying to listen to computer-generated 'white noise' music or to completely repetitive sound-patterns. So, a good book, but not an ear-opener.

A Must Have

I was given a copy of this booklet a couple of years ago,I have since purchased many copies. I now have copies everywhere. I keep a copy in the car, in my pocketbook ,next to my reading chair, and next to the bed. I also like to keep an extra on hand to pass along. Recently I purchased the kindle edition, I think that covers all the bases. This little booklet has improved my time with Mary immensely. The bead by bead reflections really help to keep me focused. I wish I could find something like this on audio. You will not regret this purchase.

Good Word Pictures to Aid in Meditating on the Rosary

I first purchased this as a help to remembering the rosary mysteries and to aid in a deeper meditation on them. Some people find they meditate best on the mysteries while looking at pictures, drawings, or sacred art. I meditate best by building a word picture, and that is what this booklet gives you. It provides a sentence or two for each bead to help meditate on the mysteries, and provides Scriptural references for many of them.

I've bought four copies and I expect to purchase many more. At this price it is easy to give away to anyone who expressed interest in the way of praying on and meditating on the rosaries.

It does give a guide in general to praying the rosary and the preceding prayers. It does not contain the entire text of all the prayers said at my church following the rosary (this seems to vary from parish to parish anyway). It does contain the Salve Regina (Hail Holy Queen), but omits the Rosary Prayer, the Memorare, and the Prayer to St. Michael. I simply paste them in from another source.

I love this book! Like Diana, I enjoy trying new and unusual ingredients, as well as different flavor combinations. With today's access to just about any ingredient online, I don't even need to leave the house to purchase some of these items. I also enjoy spending time in the kitchen, preparing new and exciting dishes (although I am a full time professional)!
Frankly, I was a bit surprised by a previous comment, and thought it was unfair. "Simple" is not necessarily interpreted the same way by everyone. I find this book's title appropriate in that MOST of the ingredients are "simple". They are simply transformed into something extraordinary. I also think that most people, like myself, who buy cookbooks, do not do so because they are looking for a recipe for "fried bream with a squeeze of lemon".

Big flavors, yes; simple and effortless, no

The reviews of this book and articles about the author tout Henry's passion, obsession really, with developing recipes. Out of her "laboratory" and extensive pantry fly creations that seem intended to shock eaters out of their mundane appetite for uncomplicated, familiar food. "Effortless" does not come to mind with such alchemy because if you happen not to have a stock of casarecce, cavalo nero, 'nduja, or even pea shoots or black venus rice, etc., you need to go shopping or go online, or both. I guess from an alchemical gastronomical perspective, why settle for a simple pan-fried or baked bream filet with a twist of lemon and sprinkle of chopped parsley when you can pimp it up with walnuts, pomegranate seeds, red chile, honey, and pomegranate molasses. And why accompany your fish with simple creamy coleslaw when you can transform (or disguise) your shredded cabbage with baby spinach, apples, red onion, walnuts, caraway seeds, and blackberries. While the book's title, to me, is not appropriate, this book does remind busy people needing to cook their dinner that even light touches of Moroccan, Indian, Chinese, or Vietnamese ingredients and spices can make a mundane platter look and taste more interesting. For people with unlimited time for shopping, maintaining a vast pantry, and preparing a mise en place of 10-15 ingredients, it is ideal.

About the Author
Wendy Doniger O'Flaherty�is the Mircea Eliade Professor of the History of Religions in the Divinity School and a professor in the Department of South Asian Languages and Civilizations and the Committee on Social Thought at the University of Chicago. She is the author of numerous books, including, most recently, The Woman Who Pretended to Be Who She Was.

Storytelling.....

In OTHER PEOPLE'S MYTHS, Wendy O'Flaherty says "God created people because he loves stories." O'Flaherty teaches History of Religion at the University of Chicago. She says not everyone will approach her book with the same level of interest. The orthodox religious may find it sacriligious while hard-core secular humanists may find it too "religious." However, she believes some secular humanists may be ready to rethink the premise that rational thought is the only way to gain a handle on reality, and it is to them she dedicates this book.
MYTHS will prove illuminating to those who study the history of religion (non-theologians), fascinating to anthropologists who study other cultures, and provocative to theologians looking for inspiration. O'Flaherty's book is a synthesis of many strands from many disciplines--she likes the metaphor of weaving to describe her work.
O'Flaherty says myths can provide alternative answers to the fundamental questions of life and death. Juxtaposed, these answers can be deciphered like a secret code. She says myths are not lies they are fragments of the truth. Myths are the clothes archetypes wear--or structures if you're a structuralist, or parables if you're God.
O'Flaherty, a Jew, is a specialist in Christian and Hindu mythology. She compares and contrasts the various stories of these two cultures with the earlier Greek myths--which she says weren't myths at all by the time they were discussed by Plato, but mere shadows of their former selves--zombies. Myths are alive, they resonate.
She says Allan Bloom (author of THE CLOSING OF THE AMERICAN MIND) says we have lost our classics (stories) and to a certain extent she agrees with him. But, she says, the classics to which Bloom refers never belonged to all the people whereas myths do. She tells of the Mahabharata which the most illiterate peasant in India knows. In the U.S., it's equivalent is the Bible. Most Westerners can recite some sections of the Bible.
As far as the classics go, they don't survive unless they are mythologized. To mythologize a story is to tell it over and over. Not all stories can become myths. Myths bear repeating. There are many different kinds of myths, from those involving Western heros to those about characters in children's tales like Cinderella. (I discovered Cinderella is a Chinese tale--hence the small feet as an aspect of female beauty, and those slippers were fur, not glass--the tale was mistranslated!!).
In the information age, the theater plays a large role in the transmission of cultural myths. Movies are big in the U.S. and big in India. O'Flaherty says her favorite mythical tale is "Through the Looking Glass." She mentions other tales--both written and on film that are mythical including "Star Wars", "The Red Shoes", and "The Wizard of Oz." She says in a pluralistic society, many new tales will be mythologized, and new heros will materialize -- The Lion King, Harry Potter, and James Bond??
O'Flaherty wrote her book in the late 1980s before the "English Patient" was released as a book and film. She says Herodotus was the first person to record the existence of a myth as an aspect of a culture. I kept thinking as I read the book and she cited Herodotus over and over, I must watch "The English Patient" again.

Approachable, Interesting, personal.

I am interested in myths because of my personal experience of them; they are rich in personal meaning. Ms Doniger has had similar experiences it seems. I have framed them more with Jungian and post Jungian understandings. Ms Doniger has framed them within her academic field. While she does deal with archetypes without dismissing them, she mainly uses her extensive knowledge and understanding of hindu myths and her trainig in comparitive religion. Thus there are parts that are quite detailed and the arguments a little involved (hence the 4). But on the other hand her approach in using myths to talk about myths is otherwise quite playful and engaging; using riches to uncover riches. The book also reads like a personal testament, parts of which I identified with. At the beginning she describes her own encunter with Hindu myth (which she was studying) at the time of her father's death. She found the myths helped her much more than her own; hence the title of the book. I, a white western protestant christian, have found greek, hindu and other non-christian myths more helpful and more profoundly meaningful than my faith in dealing with my own difficult circumstances. Perhaps this book is Ms Doniger's journey of trying to understanding why someone elses myth could speak so powerfully to an american jew. In the other of her books i have read 'The Implied Speder' her intellectual rigor and training is evident. Thankfully this book is far more fleshy, less rigorous, more suggestive, more approachable. However we try to understand the mechanism, myths (be they classical, popular, ancient, modern, parochial, foreign, offensive or affirming) are alive and well and mis/behaving as ever they did, regardless of our religous labels. Ms Doniger and I are in agreement on that !

Read a good book, instead.

Ms. Doniger O'Flaherty writes as if she has escaped the narrow bounds of her Jewish upbringing to understand a more universal world of mythology, and, by this method, enhanced her understanding of Jewish mythology. Sadly, she seems not to have escaped the bounds at all. She writes in circles, telling us that it is neither possible, nor beneficial to create new mythologies and new rituals, though she does not explain why this is so. She fails to grasp that all myths and rituals had origins at some moment in time, and did not come to us with the first spark of human life, sacred and divine. She starts to deal with issue, but skirts it, as she does most issues. In then end, she is trapped by the narrow limits of Christianity, Judaism, and Hinduism. In the narrowness of her view, including Hinduism seems to imply that she has stretched her mind to encompass the universal. Much that should be scholarship seems to generate from her own hopes, fears, and neurotic world view. I liken her to a psycologist, out to heal herself and treating her illness as a universal. While every writer writes from a perspective that is uniquely their own, Ms. Doniger O'Flaherty's perspective is self-absorbed, and she shows an incredible inability to look at the world through the eyes of others. Worse, she is painfully unaware of this defect. Unless you are one who finds bad scholarship amusing, I suggest looking to another source for an introduction to the field of folklore.
