Learn Quickly from a World-Renowned Expert

There’s no medical jargon here. Dr. Yapko gets right to the point. Actually, he gets right to 50 different points. That sounds like a big number, I know. But each point is presented as a chewable bite of two or three pages, organized in four groups within a manageable 130 pages. Here is how I summarize those four groups. 1. Let’s start by clearing up any confusion about what depression is and isn’t. (This will surprise you.) 2. Now let me tell you the essential skills on how to get stronger. (And some of those skills are simply changing your attitude.) 3. You’re not going to figure all this out up in your head; you’ve got to reach out and connect with others. (You’ve simply got to. Because he understands what the depressed person needs most, he created a format that provides clear and accessible direction to those most at risk of getting lost and discouraged by all of the confusing and overwhelming information about depression. Teens, adults, parents, teachers, therapists, doctors should all have this practical book nearby to read and to share.

Excellent Guidebook to the Way out of Depression (and much more!)

This is one of the few books that I know that is helpful even if you just read the titles of the chapters! In “Keys to Unlocking Depression,” Dr. Yapko provides a series of easy to read chapters that highlight skills and information that are essential to recover from and prevent depression. In one example, he discussed the importance pairing motivation and skill/information with the observation that “It doesn’t matter how motivated you are to watch the sunset. If you face east you’re not going to see it!” The nature of the suggestions throughout the book are so foundational that even if you don’t suffer from depression, you will benefit from knowing and then following the suggestions. His hopeful and inspiring message includes information about how to proactively modify your genes with actions and how to more efficiently apply your efforts to achieve results you really value in your life. Dr. Yapko combines practical wisdom, stories and anecdotes, and research in an easy to follow guidebook to resilience. A very useful book for anyone!
