This volume introduces the reader to the civilizations of Mesopotamia. Topics covered include archaeology, stratigraphy, carbon-14 dating, Sumer, Babylon, Assyria, the development of agriculture, the invention of writing, the emergence of cities, art, architecture, literature, and mythology of the civilizations of Mesopotamia. Mesopotamia as the cradle of civilization is an underlying theme of the book; the influence of Mesopotamia on Egypt, India, Israel, and Greece as well as writing, the wheel, written laws, and the concept of kings can all be traced back to Mesopotamia. As with other books in this series numerous maps, illustrations, and photographs supplement and enhance the narrative.
